Welcome to another season of speech and debate! Read on below for the latest news and resources from the NSDA. If you haven't already, be sure to renew your school membership by October 1 to retain access to newsletters, resources, and more member benefits! When you renew, remember the Resource Package is discounted to $99 through September 30. 

New Resource Hubs

Based on member feedback from the resource survey last spring, we've created new resource hubs with the best content in each category. These web pages are accessible from the Resources menu on our website. 
  • The Coaching Debate hub and Coaching Speech hub feature our most popular coaching and teaching resources, including:
    • Courses to explore event rules and coaching strategies
    • Grab-and-go lesson plans and textbooks
    • Sample performances and explanations
    • Monthly topic and practice tools
  • The Team Management hub features resources for running your team including:
    • Sample handbooks
    • Tips for managing your roster
    • Guides to tournament hosting and attendance

Launch into the New Season with Springboard

Our Springboard Series is back and better than ever! Your team is invited to join us for a variety of free, online competitions including after-school scrimmages and weekend tournaments. The first scrimmage is September 14, only a week away! Events are open to all—there is no membership requirement to participate this fall. Questions? Join us Thursday, September 9 from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. CT for office hours! This opportunity is made possible by the generosity of The Julia Burke Foundation.

Apply for $5,000 for Your Team This Month

In order to ensure more students have access to speech and debate, the Keith West Memorial School Grant will provide a $5,000 grant to one school each year that shows strong potential but significant lack of financial resources. This fall, one school will receive $5,000 and two schools will receive $2,500. Apply by September 20.
General NSDA program grants are also available for new programs and Title I schools. 

Big Questions: Apply, Host an Event, Earn Funds!

In Big Questions, students debate topics at the intersection of science, religion, and philosophy.
The 2021-2022 topic is, Resolved: On balance, societies benefit from religious belief and practice. You can earn up to $2,500 for your team when you apply and are approved to host an event at a tournament or against members of your own team. Online events are eligible. 
Almost $1.5 million has been awarded to programs since 2016. Funding is limited, so get started today!

Plan for National Hispanic Heritage Month

September 15 through October 15 is National Hispanic Heritage Month! We encourage your team to celebrate with our tools and materials.

The American Legion's National Oratorical Contest. Looking for college scholarships? Look no further. The first place finisher of the American Legion's National Oratorical Contest is awarded an $25,000 scholarship, second-place $22,000, and third-place $20,000. Those top three finishers may also earn the right to compete in Original Oratory or United States Extemp aat the National Speech & Debate Tournament! Want to get involved?
