June 2022
Greetings Volunteers,
What an exciting time at the Garden! Thank you to everyone who was able to stop by at the Meet & Greet last Tuesday and who has taken a few minutes to stop and say hello. In the short time that I have been part of the Garden, I have heard from staff, friends, and visitors how much they value your contributions. Thank you for taking such wonderful care of the Garden and all of our visitors!
I'm looking forward to all of the possibilities as the Garden merges with the Conservatory of Flowers and Japanese Tea Garden on July 1 to form the Gardens of Golden Gate Park! Keep an eye out for new opportunities to learn more about these spaces in the coming months.
Until then, we have some exciting opportunities and events coming up!

Help Our Next Generation of Garden Visitors

Can you help us this July during weekdays? Kids from summer camps from SFRPD Equity Zone Recreation Centers in San Francisco will be visiting the Garden this summer and we can use your help welcoming them to the Garden and engaging with them in discovery and exploration. Volunteers with experience or interest in working with kids in the Garden are welcome to sign up, training and materials will be provided as needed. To get a sense of their busy day, outside of visiting the Garden, campers will also ride the SkyStar Wheel, visit Monumental Reckoning, and then go off to the Carousel and the Koret Children’s Quarter. Their time at the Garden will be short (one-hour) but we hope it will be wonderful. If you are interested in signing up and want to learn more, you can email Annette Huddle at ahuddle@sfbg.org - or - sign up here.

Chanel, the Titan Arum, at the Conservatory of Flowers, was a bloom over the weekend! Visitors waited in long lines to see and smell the bloom, which is the “largest unbranched inflorescence” in the world.
In case you missed it, you can see some coverage below:
Thank you to Janet Flemer for sharing this wonderful photo from Friday evening just as the bloom began!

Volunteer Spotlight: Cathy Barry, Green Team Volunteer
Cathy Barry retired last year as an elementary school teacher and wanted to do volunteer work. "I love gardening and the outdoors, so being on a Green Team in a beautiful setting like the Garden was a perfect match for me." Cathy works on Ben's New Zealand and South Africa Gardens team, but says a favorite spot in the Garden is the bamboo forest on a breezy day, listening to the sounds of bamboo swaying in the wind.  "I like learning about new and exotic plants and their care. Working on a team and meeting new people is an added bonus!  With unusual plants, it can be challenging to try new things - like trimming a bush or thinning a small tree - but it's fun when you learn how to do it, with an expert always on hand to help you learn!"

With her official school days now behind her, we're happy to have Cathy continue her lifelong learning by helping us maintain our beautiful "outdoor classroom."

Thank you for this wonderful interview Steve Bell! If any volunteers are open to being interviewed by Steve, please let me know.

Summer Reading Club
  • Summer Reading Club launched on June 5! This free eight-week reading activity program for children ages 0-12 is still open and children may register at any point during June or July and will receive free seeds when they complete the weekly logs. This program ends on July 31.

  • Garden Camp 2022 is a-go! After a week-long hands-on training in the Garden, our summer camp team launched their first day of program on Monday, June 20! With training sessions in the Children’s Garden, scavenger hunts to get from location to location, guided tours of the JTG and COF, and an introduction to the horticultural team – this group of counselors is ready for an awesome summer.

  • We’ve wrapped up our spring season in the Children’s Garden, where over a thousand children from 15 schools helped plant 441 seeds and transplant 270 plants, along with pulling weeds, harvesting compost, mixing soil, and watering plants. Bean Sprouts Family Days has set a new record, reaching over 4,250 kids and caregivers. The Youth Education Team is now preparing for a busy summer with expanded Bean Sprouts Family Days, Summer Sprouts for groups and a teen intern program. Thank you to all of our wonderful Children's Garden volunteers who helped make this possible! If you're interested in volunteering in the Children's Garden, please let me know!
Please let me know if you have something you'd like to share with the volunteer community in a future newletter.
I look forward to seeing you soon!
Best wishes,
Crystal
