4-H Training for New Volunteers Update - Grow Green Orientation |
Volunteers may remember participating in VIP (Volunteers in Preparation), we are now shifting to a new volunteer orientation called “Grow Green.” This is a new, interactive orientation that is available online or available in a paper format to be read offline.
It is designed to be taken whenever convenient for the new volunteer. If you start the training and need to step away, you can come back to the website using the same device you started with and it will pick up where you left off.
New volunteers will learn about some of the 4-H guiding principles (Essential Elements, Life Skills Development, Ages & Stages of Youth) and gain practical tips to use as a volunteer in the two short, interactive training modules.
One module is an introduction to volunteering in Extension and Wisconsin 4-H, and a second module that is geared towards a specific volunteer role. Combined, this orientation should take around 45 minutes to complete.
Grow Green is offered online at the link below. Click on the green “Start the Training” button to begin.
We are hopeful that this will make orientation more convenient and beneficial. This orientation is required for all new volunteers, it is available online for all volunteers to take as a refresher. Thank you to our volunteers for mentoring and supporting the youth in 4-H. If you have any questions or need any assistance, please contact James Boling at james.boling@wisc.edu or 262-548-7784.

2024 Wisconsin 4-H State Livestock and Skill-A-Thon Contests
Mark your calendars for the upcoming 4-H Livestock Quiz Bowl and Skill-A-Thon Contest! If you have participated in the past or this is the first time you are hearing about the contest, we would love to have you join for a day of learning, fun, and competition. These are two different contests all about livestock where you can use your knowledge about the animal species (beef, sheep, swine, meat goat) and the industry.
-
Livestock Quiz Bowl: Livestock Bowl is a quiz competition where all the questions are about beef, sheep, swine, and meat goat topics. Students use a buzzer to answer the questions (similar to the game show Jeopardy). Teams compete in a double elimination format by giving oral answers to questions posed by a moderator. Each match has both an individual and toss-up question round. The top team earns the opportunity to compete at the national competition.
-
Livestock Skill-A-Thon: Everything you know about raising your animal adds up to so much knowledge of the species and the industry. The Skill-a-thon contest will help you challenge you to share that information through a written quiz and learning stations such as breed identification, feed identification, equipment identification as well as some team activities such as demonstrating evaluation skills. There are both individual and team stations. The top team earns the opportunity to compete at the national competition.
Any current 4-H members grades 3-13 can participate. Please note, there are age divisions for each contest and parameters for grade 13 members. Please see the contest information in the link below for more information on the age divisions. Even if your county has not participated in the past, round-up some 4-H friends and take advantage of this fun opportunity to show your knowledge of the animal species and industry.
