The CSRC was well represented at the 17th International Interdisciplinary Conference on Clinical Supervision (IICCS), held June 12-14, 2024, at the University of Redlands, Redlands, California. Attendees included CSRC members from Australia, Canada, India, Ireland, Malta, and Mexico, as well as the United States.
CSRC Panel
And the CSRC-sponsored programming was quite popular. Despite the early morning start-time (7:45 am) to accommodate the presenters, a large number of conference participants attended the virtual panel presentation on supervision of international humanitarian workers. Dr. Ruth Wells and colleagues, Gülşah Kurt, Sabiha Jahan, Salah Lekkeh, and Kelly McBride, described their work with local mental health workers supporting displaced Syrians in Türkiye and Syria and Rohingya in Bangladesh, as well as their supervision research findings.
A number of conference participants indicated the panel was their first opportunity to learn about any group’s efforts to provide supportive supervision to local workers in remote locations. They were impressed by the dedication of this supervision practice/research group. See photos here.
CSRC Research Think Tank
Over 50 conference participants attended the interactive ‘research think tank’ workshop sponsored by CSRC. Participants – supervision researchers, practitioners, and educators, including doctoral students – were invited to share “what we know and what we need to know” about clinical supervision. The blackboards in the meeting room were almost filled by the end of the hour, including striking similarities of topics – across countries and disciplines – that need further study. There was strong consensus to plan a longer research think tank meeting at the next IICCS conference. See photos here on the CSRC website.
Conference Observations and Reflections from CSRC Members
The IICCS is a relatively small conference, at 250+ attendees, with a large welcoming community spirit that ignores disciplinary borders and hierarchies. A common passion for enhancing clinical supervision practice, training, and research enlivens cross-disciplinary and cross-national conversations. In fact, CSRC was developed in an effort to provide avenues for the many fruitful conversations that begin at the IICCS.
Four CSRC members attending IICCS for the first time commented on the spirit of the conference and shared their observations and reflections. Read their "Brief Reports on the IICCS" below.
Thanks and Looking Forward
CSRC is grateful to IICCS conference organizers for allowing time and space for our sponsored programming, as well as plenaries, presentations, and round table discussions that inspired ideas for broadening our understanding of effective clinical supervision.
We hope to see many CSRC members next year at the 18th IICCS meeting, to be held at Rutgers University, June 11-13, 2025.
