Technology and Modernization: Discussed the challenges of technology changeovers and system modernization within state departments, noting that these processes can take a long time but highlighted how crucial they are for improving state operations.
Integrity: Defined integrity in government as transparency, accountability, and stewardship. She emphasized the importance of being good stewards of taxpayer dollars and maintaining transparency and accountability in all operations.
Impact: Highlighted the need for measurable impact in state operations. She encouraged leaders to focus on outcomes that matter to Tennesseans and to ensure that their efforts lead to tangible improvements in state services.
Collaboration and Teamwork: Shared a personal anecdote about a successful initiative that resulted from a suggestion that a team member from a completely non-related team had, demonstrating the power of teamwork and creative problem-solving. The initiative led to Tennessee becoming the first state in the country to have a Homeland Security agent in every county. This collaboration between Homeland Security, law enforcement, and school districts became a model for other states, demonstrating the significant impact of the idea. She encouraged leaders to be open to ideas from all team members and to work together to achieve common goals.
Relentless Communication: Stressed the importance of relentless communication of the vision and goals to ensure that everyone in the organization is aligned and working towards the same objectives.
Keynote - Dr. Alex Miller: Dr. Alex Miller is the William B. Stokely Chair of Business in the University of Tennessee’s Haslam College of Business and the Pro2Serve Director of the Consortium for Social Enterprise. Dr. Miller's keynote address to TGL focused on the essential qualities of effective leadership, including vision, adaptability, integrity, impact, collaboration, and continuous learning. He provided insights into how leaders can navigate challenges and drive meaningful change within their organizations:
Leadership and Vision: Emphasized the importance of having a clear vision and being able to communicate it effectively to inspire and guide teams. He highlighted that leaders must be able to see the big picture and articulate it in a way that motivates others.
Adaptability and Innovation: He discussed the necessity for leaders to be adaptable and open to innovation. Dr. Miller pointed out that the rapidly changing environment requires leaders to be flexible and willing to embrace new ideas and technologies.
Integrity and Trust: Integrity was a key theme in Dr. Miller's message. He stressed that leaders must build trust through transparency, honesty, and ethical behavior. Trust is foundational for effective leadership and team cohesion.

TGL Toastmasters – April Romero: April introduced TGL Toastmasters, which is a club designed to help individuals improve their leadership skills (such as public speaking) in a supportive peer environment. Benefits of joining Toastmasters include enhanced communication skills, increased confidence in public speaking, opportunities to practice and refine public speaking skills in a supportive setting, development of leadership abilities through various club roles and activities. TGL Toastmasters is open to Tennessee Government Leadership Alumni who are looking to improve their professional skills and pursue personal growth.

The key focus areas were imagineering, integrity, & impact: Imagineering - encouraging creativity and innovation in the workplace, fostering an environment where new ideas are welcomed and explored. Integrity - maintaining ethical behavior and transparency in leadership, ensuring that actions align with stated values and goals. Impact - Focusing on the long-term effects of leadership decisions, building sustainable processes, and empowering future leaders. Each panelist focused on practical applications and shared strategies to help bring more imagineering, integrity, & impact to Tennessee.
Kristin Darby: Emphasized the importance of creating a clear vision and ensuring it is well understood by everyone involved. Highlighted the need for transparency and effective communication in leadership. Shared insights on leveraging technology and AI to improve citizen services while maintaining human elements in decision-making.
Kristin Coulter: Discussed the significance of thinking outside the box and being open to new and innovative ideas. Stressed the importance of learning from failures and being willing to accept help when needed.
Jason Pack: Highlighted the role of crisis situations in shaping leadership skills and the importance of being at one's best during others' worst times. Emphasized the need for tough conversations and making decisions under pressure.
