The Species Maker
As a professor of science, technology, and society, Kristin Johnson has interests ranging from conservation biology to the history of science and religion. She’s also a prolific writer whose newest book is set against the backdrop of the heated argument surrounding evolution in the 1920s. Her novel, The Species Maker is now available for pre-order and will be in bookstores on Oct. 26. We sat down with her to talk about the book, her research, and how we can better understand today’s divisive scientific controversies.

HACKS & CHOPS Professor of English Priti Joshi published a new book over the summer. Empire News: The Anglo-Indian Press Writes India (SUNY Press) is the outcome of extensive work examining the neglected archive of English-language Indian newspapers during critical years of the British empire’s ascendency in India, 1840–60. Joshi explains that “the book is an effort to understand how empire is produced and circulated in the everyday, and how newspapers managed colonial crises.”

SAY CHEESE We loved seeing all the Loggers on campus for Homecoming and Family Weekend 2021. Students, alumni, families, faculty, staff, and friends from near and far were on hand, repping the maroon and white—and green and gold—in spades. One of our favorite weekend activities?
