This funding opportunity announcement aims to support research to strengthen the healthcare response to Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and future public health emergencies, including pandemics. While research related to the direct clinical effects of COVID-19 are supported by other funding opportunities, the purpose of this funding opportunity is to focus on the role and impact of digital health interventions [e.g., mobile health (mhealth), telemedicine and telehealth, health information technology (IT), and wearable devices] to address access, reach, delivery, effectiveness, scalability and sustainability of health assessments and interventions for secondary effects (e.g., behavioral health or self-management of chronic conditions) that are utilized during and following the pandemic, particularly in populations who experience health disparities and vulnerable populations.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) does not allow candidates to propose to lead an independent clinical trial, but does allow candidates to propose research experience in a clinical trial led by a sponsor or co-sponsor.

Advanced computational infrastructure and the ability to perform large-scale simulations and accumulate massive amounts of data have revolutionized scientific and engineering disciplines. The goal of the CDS&E program is to identify and capitalize on opportunities for major scientific and engineering breakthroughs through new computational and data analysis approaches. The intellectual drivers may be in an individual discipline or they may cut across more than one discipline in various Directorates. The key identifying factor is that the outcome relies on the development, adaptation, and utilization of one or more of the capabilities offered by advancement of both research and infrastructure in computation and data, either through cross-cutting or disciplinary programs.
Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation

The Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation is accepting LOIs for its Beckman Young Investigator Program, which provides research support to promising young faculty members in the early stages of their careers in the chemical and life sciences. Through the program, grants of approximately $600,000 over four years will be awarded in support of innovative, high-risk projects that show promise for contributing to significant advances in chemistry and the life sciences. Projects should represent a departure from current research directions rather than an extension or expansion of existing programs. Proposed research that cuts across traditional boundaries of scientific disciplines is encouraged. Proposals that open new avenues of research in chemistry and life sciences by fostering the invention of methods, instruments, and materials will be given additional consideration.
Institute for Advanced Study- School of Social Science 2021-22 Residencies

Each year, approximately 25 scholars are selected as Members in the School of Social Science. A completed doctorate or equivalent is required by the application deadline. Memberships are awarded at both the junior and senior levels. They are for the full academic year only unless the scholar is from a country with an academic calendar that is substantially different than the one in the U.S., in which case single-term Memberships will be considered. Scholars may be considered for a second residency if a sufficient amount of time has passed since their initial Membership. Members are expected only to pursue their own research and participate in the seminars. The theme for 2021-22 is "Political Mobilizations and Social Movements," but applications outside the theme are also welcomed. An interdisciplinary dialogue will be fostered and applications are strongly encouraged from scholars across the social sciences, whether or not their research corresponds to the theme.

New IRB Submission System Launches Soon
The UMSL Institutional Review Board (IRB) will begin using eCompliance as our online submission system for IRB applications in late July 2020. Early Career Research Network (ECRN)

The Early Career Research Network (ECRN) is an intentional effort to help new faculty quickly build productive research programs, obtain funding, find collaborators, and build supportive networks of colleagues across campus. The group meets second Friday mornings during the 2020-2021 academic year. Chris Spilling, vice chancellor for research and economic & community development, facilitates, along with funded investigators from multiple disciplines. Tenure track faculty in years 1-4 are encouraged to apply.

Chris Spilling Named Vice Chancellor for Research and Economic and Community Development
During his 31 years at the University of Missouri–St. Louis, Chris Spilling has been a faculty member and a department chair and then moved into administration, holding positions such as interim vice provost, interim provost and, most recently, as vice provost for graduate studies and research.
In his words, he’s “grown up through the ranks” at UMSL.
All that has given him the background and perspective needed to assume a role that’s new both to him and UMSL. Today Chancellor Kristin Sobolik announced that Spilling would assume the newly created position of vice chancellor for research and economic and community development.
“I think I understand what the faculty and the students need,” Spilling said. “I was also a first-generation college student – in England, admittedly – but I can certainly identify with many of the students that UMSL is educating. Understanding the mission of the institution is very important to have in a senior leadership role.”
Spilling will continue to lead and guide research at UMSL while adding community and economic development, which includes the Anchor Institution Initiative headed by Assistant Vice Chancellor Karl Guenther and the Community Innovation and Action Center.
In his new role, Spilling reports directly to the chancellor, a reorganization that reflects the structure of the other three University of Missouri System universities.
“This change elevates the important role that research has at UMSL, one of only four public research institutions in the state,” Sobolik said. “As we continue to engage more heavily in economic and community development, the collaborative synergy with research will advance UMSL, St. Louis and the region. Chris is the right person to lead our efforts on these fronts, and I’m looking forward to working on new ideas with him and his team.”

UMSL's TTO staff work to analyze the technology regarding intellectual property protection and the market need to determine whether patent applications should be filed and/or copyrights should be registered. For those inventions that can be protected (and even some that cannot), we then look for potential industry partners, which could include established companies and/or startup ventures, to license and commercialize the discovery.
We also process all Material Transfer Agreements (MTAs), Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDAs), and research-related fee-for-service agreements, among others, for UMSL.
