Automatic Attendance Calls Resume
Monday, November 2

We wanted to take the time to inform you that in the second quarter, starting Monday, November 2nd, we will be turning on our Automatic Attendance Calls. This means if your student is marked absent for the day in any class, we would notify the parent or guardian that same evening of the absence. This is an important tool to help your student be successful in all of their classes.

As always, we still want you to call or preferably email the Attendance Office to report an excused absence for your student at whsattendance@nsd.org or 425-408-7410. If you find that the absence reported might be a mistake, please have your student reach out to their teacher first and then, if needed, the Attendance Office.

ACT/SAT Testing
For information regarding testing, please refer to the College Board or ACT websites at collegeboard.org or act.org. Local testing is scheduled for December and March.  However, due to Covid, testing in December is unlikely to happen.  We can hope for testing in March.  Please note that many colleges are not requiring and considering ACT/SAT scores as they conduct a holistic review of incoming freshmen applications.  We highly recommend that seniors refer to the college website for specifics admission requirements.

Midterm Reports - Quarter Ends October 30

It’s been a roller coaster start to the school year, but believe it or not, the end of the first quarter is October 30th, a little more than two weeks away! Midterm reports are not final grades and they do not go on your transcript. They should be viewed as a gauge of how you’re doing in your classes. We’re only halfway through the semester, so if you’re not doing as well as you’d like, you’ve got time to turn it around! Take full advantage of asynchronous Wednesdays by setting up a Zoom meeting with your teachers, emailing your school counselor, or getting some help from a friend. If you’re doing okay, keep up the good work!
Schoology Screencast
Did you make it to Advisory on Tuesday for the Schoology Tutorial?? Here is the Talon Time Screencast and some of the things we’ve taken away from the training:
● Make sure to check your grades in Schoology, regularly.
● You can add assignments to your calendar if they aren’t showing up automatically as an assignment with a due date.
● Make sure to look at your list of overdue assignments but if teachers have given you a 50% grade for a missing assignment, then it will not be listed in your overdue list. Be sure to check your actual grades to see if you are missing additional assignments.
● We realize this might be a lot to manage right now, reach out to your teacher or counselor for help
Sincerely,
Your WHS School Counselors

Apply for Free & Reduced Price Meals Today!

While Northshore is currently providing free meals, this support is made possible by temporary USDA funding. If this funding changes, the District may be required to charge families based on their current eligibility for meals. Have you applied for free and reduced-price meals this year?
If your family qualified last year, you need to reapply this year to ensure that your student receives free or reduced price meals once the current free meals program ends. It is important to apply today so that your eligibility status doesn’t lapse. If an application is not in process for a returning student by October 14, 2020, the student’s account will automatically be transferred to a paid account on the next school day. Please know that the number of eligible students for free and reduced price meals connects to the District’s Title I funding, which provides additional support at schools to help students succeed. Additionally, if your family income has decreased, you may be eligible for free or reduced-price school meals.
In addition to receiving free or reduced-price meals, your eligibility also provides
  • Reduced fee for Camp Cedar Spring
  • Reduced fee for PSAT and Advanced Placement Testing
  • Reduced fee for sports/athletics
  • Reduced fee for summer school
  • Access to Backpack Program, which provides backpacks and school supplies
  • Access to Operation School Bell, which provides clothes and personal products

To find out if you are eligible and to apply online visit our website.
School Lunch Information
Beginning Wednesday, September 9, NSD started offering free meals for all children ages 18 and younger.
Students do not need to be enrolled in the Northshore School District to receive meals. NSD requires that all families wear a mask and maintain physical distancing when picking up their meals. Thank you for helping to keep our drivers and families safe.
For more information, visit the NSD Website.
Student Work Permit Signatures!
Is your student working this year and in need of their Work Permit Signed? If so, please have them contact their WHS Counselor via email and they can help get this signed for them.

Woodinville High School Theatre Presents:
A Halloween Radio Extravaganza
Get your tickets now!

This year, Woodinville High School’s award-winning Theatre Company is trying something completely new: Radio! We are venturing into the world of physically distant, but creatively connected, radio plays. The WHS (Theatre) Broadcasting Company is excited to present “Tales of Terror”, five nightly performances of vintage horror shows from the golden age of radio. Included are such favorites as Edgar Allan Poe’s Fall of The House of Usher, Oscar Wilde’s Canterville Ghost, classic horror radio shows from the 1930s and 1940s, and the gothic terror of Dracula. All 10 radio plays are pre-recorded and will be broadcast on our YouTube channel with a few visual cues interspersed. There will be two stories each night, offering some spooky family entertainment leading up to the grand finale performance of Dracula on Halloween evening.

Performances are October 27 through October 31, 2020 at 7:00 pm. The link to our YouTube channel will go live each night at 6:45 pm. We encourage you to position your device in a central place in your home, gather all members of your household and get comfortable for an hour of spine-tingling entertainment. Tickets are $5 per device for all 10 shows and will be available online on TouchBase beginning October 12, 2020.
  • Individuals with students in Northshore will be able to purchase tickets by logging into their TouchBase account (do not create a Guest Account!). If a Northshore parent/guardian is in need of their TouchBase username/password, please email whsattendance@nsd.org.
  • Individuals who do not have students in Northshore can create a Guest Account at TouchBase.
More detailed information about the WHS Theatre Company and its community-based Drama Booster organization is available at www.whstc.org.

Power or Internet Outage - What To Do

We understand that weather incidents may cause a loss of power when students and staff are engaged in distance learning. Our district's Technology, Northshore Learns, and Communications teams collaborated with educators to develop a plan for notifications about power outages, access to service, and how everyone can prepare ahead of time to adjust and continue learning. Please visit our website to learn what to do if your power goes out or if your teacher's power goes out.

Washington's K-12 Internet Access Program: Check Eligibility for Free Internet Access

Having reliable connectivity to the internet is critical for your student’s success during distance learning. The state recognizes this need, and has partnered with Ziply Fiber and Comcast/Xfinity to create Washington’s K–12 Internet Access Program, which gives eligible families free internet access so your student can connect to online learning from home.

This internet access opportunity will provide you with faster, stronger and more reliable connectivity than hotspots or tethering to mobile devices, which will better support your student. If eligible, your free internet access is available through June 30, 2021.
Complete information and the steps to check elegibility, can be found on the Woodinville High School Website.

Update Your Contact Information

As the new school year begins, we encourage families to take a few minutes to check their contact information, including phone numbers and email addresses. We use parent/guardian email addresses to create school mailing lists. The District also uses email as a tool for sharing important, and sometimes urgent, information with families. Automated phone calls are sent to families with safety and emergency messages.

You can check your contact information in ParentVUE.  For questions, please contact Attendance Secretary and WHS Online Parent Resource Coordinator Kim Benedict at whsattendance@nsd.org.
To update any information, please fill out this form and return it to our registrar Denise Schwans at dschwans@nsd.org

Visitor Management System Pilot

Dr. Reid shared in her October 15 Thursday Thoughts, that over the past year the NSD Safety & Security Department has been developing a plan to implement a visitor management software system in our schools. This plan is now finalized, and equipment is being set up and tested at NSD pilot schools: Crystal Springs, East Ridge, Kokanee and Ruby Bridges elementary schools, as well as Northshore Middle School and Bothell High School.
When it is safe to return to buildings, visitors to these schools will work with school staff to scan their driver’s license, take a photo, and receive a name badge, to be worn at all times while in the school. Once the visitor is ready to leave campus, they will return to the main office and sign out, so school staff know that the visitor is no longer in the building.
After the pilot concludes, staff will evaluate efficiency and troubleshoot any challenges. This software is anticipated to be rolled out districtwide over time. This approach will lead to consistency across all schools for all visitors and staff, and provide real-time monitoring of who is on campus, which is critical in the event of an emergency. The implementation of this new system is made possible by the generous support of our Northshore voters who approved the 2018 bond.
