Springfield Legislative Update:
Last week, the Illinois House debated a version of Governor Rauner’s ‘right to work’ legislation. That version was an amendment to HB1286 filed by House Speaker Madigan based on the Governor’s basic language in his ‘Turnaround Agenda’ document. The amendment was presumably designed to place a spotlight on an issue that does not have a lot of support in a democratically controlled House and Senate. For video coverage of the debate, please click here.
All Democrats voted “no.” Most Republicans voted “present” as a protest to the process and the amendment language being filed the same day. One Republican voted “no.” The voting record can be found here.
Speaker Madigan has also scheduled votes for Thursday on the issues of workers’ compensation and tort reform. These amendments will not be filed by the Governor or his House Republican allies. Similarly, the Speaker has scheduled a vote on Thursday for a constitutional amendment to levy an additional 3% tax on income over $1 million. The proposal was first brought to voters as a referendum question on the 2014 ballot, and received nearly 64% in support statewide.
The regular spring legislative session is scheduled to adjourn on May 31st.
Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce PAC Event on June 24th:
The Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce PAC (CPAC) is hosting an after-hours political fundraiser at Hubbard Inn on June 24. As we continue to advocate in Springfield and the City of Chicago, it is more important than ever to ensure that the voice of business is heard. Donations to our CPAC are critical in helping us achieve that goal.
Join us on Wednesday, June 24th from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Hubbard Inn, a Chicagoland Chamber member. Please register here.
Export-Import Bank Roundtable Event on June 2nd:
The Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce in partnership with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Illinois Chamber of Commerce, Boeing, and International Business Council are hosting an Export-Import Bank roundtable discussion on Tuesday, June 2nd from 9:00 -11:00 a.m.
Illinois is the 5th largest exporter of goods in the nation, selling $66.1 billion of goods to 219 countries across the globe. To date, 369 Illinois employers and thousands of employees have benefitted directly from Ex-Im support with nearly $7 billion in total export value. Without Ex-Im reauthorization, they will be at risk. The vast majority of these companies are small and medium-sized businesses from every corner of our state.
Please RSVP directly to me via reply email.
City of Chicago Inauguration:
The inauguration of Rahm Emanuel as Mayor of the City of Chicago, Susana A. Mendoza as Clerk of the City of Chicago, Kurt Summers as Treasurer of the City of Chicago, and members of the Chicago City Council was held today at the Chicago Theatre. Theresa E. Mintle, our President & CEO, attended the inauguration. The Chamber extends our congratulations to all who were inaugurated today.
