Your Pathways to the National Speech & Debate Tournament
|
The NSDA's National Tournament offers students a chance to compete against the best of the best, connect with peers from around the world, and watch (or even compete in) final rounds.
There are four pathways to compete at the NSDA National Tournament. How will you get there?
-
Main Event Qualification from Districts: Students can qualify in their main event via their district tournament. It's currently peak district season! Each district sets the dates for their competition. Check with your coach for details or explore the districts calendar to find out when your tournament is.
-
Main Event Qualification from the Last-Chance Qualifier: Students who do not qualify in their main event at districts have another chance to make it to Nationals in their main event via our online Last-Chance Qualifier April 23-25. Learn more or ask your coach to register you by April 17.
-
District World Schools Teams: Each district can send two teams of three to five students to compete in World Schools Debate at Nationals. Each district sets their own selection process, but if you're interested, talk to your coach or district chair. Learn more about World Schools Debate »
-
Supplemental Event Entries: Every member school has the opportunity to send two member students to compete in supplementals at the tournament. No qualification is required. Supplemental events start on Wednesday at the National Tournament. Check out the schedule for more details and access resources to get started with supplemental events. Supplementals include:
- Speech: Extemp Commentary, Original Spoken Word Poetry, Prose, Expository, Impromptu, Poetry, and Storytelling
- Debate: Extemp Debate

Host a Movie Screening as a Fundraiser
|
|
|
SPEAK. is a documentary that follows five high school orators as they prepare for the National Tournament. Now the power of SPEAK. can power your team! Your coach can acquire the rights to screen the film as a fundraiser. Our guide takes your team through the process of planning the event including timelines, examples from teams who've hosted events, and add-on fundraising like concessions, T-shirt sales, and more. If you're trying to raise funds for Nationals or next year, talk to your coach about planning a screening!

Celebrate Your Coach's Impact
|
Do you know an award worthy coach? Nominate them for one of our Coach of the Year awards and they could be honored by your district or even nationally! Regardless of whether they win, nominating them and sharing the words you wrote can help show them the difference they are making in the lives of students on your team.
