WHAT'S HAPPENING
Summer Leadership Conference Highlights » Thank you to everyone who was able to attend the Summer Leadership Conference. As a sneak preview, here's a link to the Rostrum article about the experience. We hope you'll plan to join us and encourage your membership to attend the Education Conference in 2017!
Rostrum Online » Watch for the Summer issue of Rostrum magazine, available online September 15! We'll feature #Nats16 highlights, an overview of the Big Questions and Podius Debates series, updated rules changes for 2016-2017, and much more.
USA Debate Team Announced » We are thrilled to announce the 2016-2017 USA Debate Team! These students were selected to represent our country in competitions across the globe. The team members are:
  • Aditya Dhar - The Harker School, California
  • Colette Faulkner - Kingwood High School, Texas
  • Nika Gottlieb - Madeira School, Virginia
  • Ellie Grossman - The Blake School, Minnesota
  • Sarah Lanier - Northland Christian School, Texas
  • Joshua May - Armand Hammer United World College, New Mexico
  • Ella Michaels - North Hollywood High School, California
  • Nikhil Ramaswamy - Plano West Sr. High School, Texas
  • Liz Yount - Harvard-Westlake School, California
This year, we introduced our first USA Debate Development Team! Underclassmen who were not selected for the team but who have great future promise will receive training, attend practice, and learn more about the international style of debate. The development team members are:

  • Connor Yu - The Blake School, Minnesota

Big Questions Debates » Districts should consider hosting an event to raise money to help offset the costs for their teams to attend Nationals, recruit new member schools, hire judges for local events, and more! You can also encourage teams in your area to apply for the Big Questions Debates Grant to earn up to $1,700 by hosting an event at their school or tournament! For more information, please visit www.speechanddebate.org/big-questions or email lauren.burdt@speechanddebate.org.
School Recruitment » We are reaching out to non-member schools via mail this month to share the value of speech and debate and of membership. Let us know about any schools or speech and debate programs in your district you’d like us to contact by emailing amy.seidelman@speechanddebate.org.
REMINDER
Register District Tournament Dates » District chairs should register all district tournament dates by November 1. Log in to the Points Application, then click "Tournament Dates" on the left and complete the form. Be sure to update any dates that may have changed!
