Do you wear a Fitbit? I received one from my family for Christmas. It is nice to keep track of my steps, though the Lord has been doing that for years. I was surprised, though, to learn how few hours I actually sleep. A battle with allergies limited my sleep one night to a little over four hours. I knew I didn’t sleep well, but that information made me feel even more tired!
God has an answer for his sleepless children. We who have made an idol of exhaustion, bringing our full calendars to God expecting him to understand, need to hear his words. “Come to me . . .” Christ embodies the rest we need.
I remember one of our student ministers in a church in Germany loved to sing, “Is your burden heavy as you bear it all alone? . . . Reach out to Jesus . . .” She confessed her own struggle to trust God, but found his help when she called on him. Jesus’ offer of rest belongs to his disciples. We who are willing to bear his easy yoke find rest for our souls as we learn about him.
One night when I couldn’t sleep I picked up a little book of prayers compiled by Richard Foster. I opened to a page that said, “This is what the Lord prays over his children when they can’t sleep at night: 'All shall be well. And all shall be well. And all manner of thing shall be well.'”
