Romans 8:28-29
And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.  For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.
New International Version (NIV)
Do you ever doubt yourself?  One song expresses it, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me, but sometimes I wonder what He can do through me.”  A healthy humility leaves room for doubting our own abilities.  On the other hand, we need never to doubt God.
Remember Paul wrote to the Jewish and Gentile believers in Rome about the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  Early in the letter, Paul wrote, “I am not ashamed of the gospel because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes.”  The term “gospel” was a word which spoke of the message that a new king or emperor had been installed in the capitol.   The evangelists would go to the towns in the empire to announce the good news that the new King had begun to reign.  Paul and others took on the term to describe the beginning of the reign of the Lord Jesus Christ which would come to final fruition in the return of the king.
In this greatest verse of perhaps the greatest chapter of Paul’s letters we hear his confidence in Christ.  We know that God works.  Literally he writes, “God all things for good.”  This promise does not tell us that only good things happen to God’s people.  Instead he points out that God is actively working all things for good.  Next week we will discover together what Paul means by “good.”
For today, let us be sure at least that this verse applies to us.  God is not working all things for good for everyone, but specifically for those who love God and who have answered his purposeful call in our lives.   Do we love God?  Have we answered his call or do we “phone-snub” him when he calls us?  Our answers are important because God’s promise is too good to miss.  Doubt yourself if you must, but please don’t doubt God’s goodness!
Pray with me:
Father, thank you for working all things together for good.  We know that bad things still happen to your people.  Show us how you are working in both good and bad to accomplish your purpose for us.  We love you Lord.  If in any way our love for you is lacking, please reveal that to us today.  We do not want to love anyone or anything more than you.  Lord, when you call, help us to hear and to know what you want so that we may answer your call today.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
