Matthew 1:22-23
All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: 23 “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”).
New International Version (NIV)
Sometimes, time seems to stand still.  Four hundred years.  Radio silence.  The last book of the Old Testament, Malachi ends with the promise that a prophet will come and turn the hearts of people back (Malachi 4:5-6).

Matthew begins with a genealogy.  In three sets of fourteen generations, he resets the picture and shows how the story of Abraham leads straight to Jesus, the promised Messiah.

Time and again, Matthew shows us that the events in Jesus’ life fulfilled the prophecies of the Old Testament.  There is a plan.  God is fulfilling that plan.  There is one story.  It is God’s story.

I know you have read the story.  I wonder.  Are you in it?  Where are you in God’s great redemption story?  He sent his Son to redeem the world.  God is with us.   Do we know him?  Will we follow him?  Wise ones still seek him.  We are not waiting for God, but God is waiting for us.  It’s time to follow Christ!
Pray with me:
Immanuel, God with us, we thank you that you are working out your plan, right on time.  Help us to set our clocks forward to God’s Standard Time today.  Write “now” on our watch faces so that we will remember that it is always now and  “Today is the day of salvation.  Now is the time.”  Gracious, patient Father, help us not to miss the redemption that is drawing near.  Let us seek you while you may be found.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
This year our Every Day with Jesus readings will follow The Bible Project Read Scripture Plan.  Copies of this reading plan are available at Tallowood Baptist Church, or download
the app at readscripture.org.  Read through the Bible with us in 2019!
Joyfully,
Duane
