Too many people in San Francisco cannot afford to take off work for jury service or do not have employers who pay them for jury service. And because income inequality is strongly correlated with race, the people most likely to be excluded from jury service are disproportionately from low-income Black and brown communities.
We shouldn’t be pricing people out of jury duty. Now that the Be The Jury pilot program has been authorized, more people will be able to engage in a fundamental civic duty. We plan to launch the pilot with our partners in San Francisco in January 2022.
