   A dear friend recently lost her dad. As we met and prayed about her loss, we remembered how at the same time of year some 19 years ago, she and her husband lost their young daughter to leukemia. In her grief, she gave me perspective when she said, “Once you lose one of your children, no other loss compares.” This sounds right to me, though I have never endured that pain.

                It is hard to imagine all that Adam and Eve lost in the fall. They not only lost innocence and their home, but ultimately they lost one of their sons because his brother killed him. In answer to the question, “Am I my brother’s keeper?” God’s answer is always, “yes.“ We are always responsible for protecting the lives of others.

                In the aftermath of Abel’s death, Adam and Eve had another son named Seth. As their other descendants ran amok, Seth gave them new hope. After his birth, the writer of Genesis tells us that in that time people began to call upon the name of the Lord. Having children will certainly make you pray. But even before God’s revelation of his name “Yahweh,” “I am that I am,” to Moses, people called on that name. Why? What drove them to prayer?

                What drives us to prayer these days? Is it the loss of someone precious? Or is it the desire to lead your family well? Audrey Assad, one of my favorite singers in recent years sings a wistful song to God, “After all has been said, after everything I’ve lost, after all we’ve been through, I’m still drawn to You.” This is Adam and Eve’s song after they lost paradise.

                No matter what we’ve been through, we should definitely call on God by name today. Call on the name of the Lord, because he answers. Call on the name of the Lord because “everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord will be saved” (Romans 10:13).

Pray with me:

Lord, we call upon your name today. Where else could we go but to the Lord? You have the words of life. We need you today. We need you everyday. We need you every hour, most gracious Lord. Lord hear our prayers. Draw us near to you. Save us from our sin. Comfort us in our grief. We want to know you more than ever before. In the name of the Lord we pray. Amen.
