TEACHING TIPS
This section is full of timely and evidence-based practices to apply in your teaching
In addition to the Jewish High Holiday season that begins this week with Rosh Hashanah, several important Hindu holidays including Navaratri, Dussehra, and Diwali will take place in October. Check out this multi-religious calendar from Yale to save the dates for holidays this academic year. You may have questions about Hindu holidays and how they are celebrated. The teaching tips and presentation below were curated in collaboration with a fellow UNCG faculty member, Dr. Sudha Shreeniwas, to help support your work with students and colleagues.
-
Which dates do the holidays fall on in 2024 and why are these holidays celebrated on different days every year? Navaratri means ‘nine nights’ and in 2024, it falls on October 3rd through 11th, 2024. Dussehra, also called Dasara, is on October 12th, 2024. Diwali, also called Deepavali is on October 31st, 2024. The Hindu calendar is a lunisolar calendar, based on both lunar cycles (to set weeks and months) and solar cycles (to set days and years). That’s why the dates of the holidays differ in the Western calendar each year.
-
What should I be aware of for my Hindu students and colleagues? Students may want some time flexibility around these dates to enable them to attend celebrations and yet keep up with their work. There is a lot of feasting involved, so if you get an invitation or are offered sweets, it’s an honor you should consider accepting or find a very tactful and polite way of declining. Ask about dress codes if any (bling and colorful and a little conservative is always safe for all genders). More information about these celebrations is available in the presentation below.
- What should I say to my Hindu students around these holidays? You can wish students and colleagues a very happy Navaratri at the start of the season. You can wish them a very happy Diwali on Diwali. You could wish them a happy and prosperous festival season.
Access the presentation below to learn more about the important Hindu holidays: Navaratri, Dussehra, and Diwali.

| Preparing for Mid-Semester Feedback
|
Now that the mid-term grade entry period has closed, it is a great time to consider a plan for soliciting mid-semester feedback from students. Our previous teaching tips discuss several strategies for collecting and responding to mid-semester feedback including our UTLC's Microsoft Forms template that you can adapt to your course. Consider giving your students a few minutes at the end of class before fall break to increase response rates, and taking time at the beginning of the next class to address major themes from the feedback surveys. Reach out to the UTLC (utlc@uncg.edu) if you have any questions!

| Reminder | New Faculty Development Program at UNCG
|
The Provost Fellows, with UTLC, have successfully launched the New Faculty Development Program (NFDP). The NFDP offers two programs monthly, providing opportunities to our UNCG faculty.
The NFDP has two primary components: Formal Sessions and Workshops. The Formal Sessions are for new faculty and include panels, roundtables, and presentations on topics such as building classroom community and cultivating one’s network. In workshops (which are open to all faculty), individuals interact with each other as they work on time management, career progression, and teaching/research support. If you have questions or wish to know additional information, please reach out via the Provost Fellows question form.

| ☕️ UTLC Faculty Coffeehouse in the Weatherspoon courtyard
|
CoffeeHouses are a space to gather with colleagues. No set agenda, just coffee (or tea), snacks, and great conversation. This year, Coffeehouses will be hosted in different locations across campus. As always, coffeehouses are open to all instructors at UNCG. Consider bringing a reusable coffee mug in order to make our efforts more sustainable!
