Exceeding expectations

We're celebrating two recent measures of success. The national ETS Proficiency test gauges students' academic potential and growth between the beginning of their first year and the end of their junior year. Dordt placed in the top 98th percentile in the nation compared to other private colleges nationally (96th when you factor in the Ivy Leagues). It's clear that our students are learning.
Recent results from the national Student Satisfaction Inventory measured students' satifaction throughout their college experience. In all, Dordt students ranked the college significantly higher than ratings by students at other private colleges on 92 of 98 survey statements. Areas where students ranked us especially high include the following statements:
  • It is an enjoyable experience to be a student on this campus
  • My understanding of God is being strengthened by classroom and/or campus experiences
  • I am able to experience intellectual growth here
  • Nearly all the faculty are knowledgeable in their field
  • My academic advisor is knowledgeable about the requirements in my major
  • Being on this campus is contributing to my spiritual growth
“What shows up as our strengths are all things we want to be good at,” said Institutional Researcher and Mathematics Professor Valorie Zonnefeld. “We almost wondered if the results could really be that good—but they are.”

Virtual Tour of Dordt's campus available online

Now you can look online at a student-produced virtual tour of all Dordt College dormitories and apartments. Both prospective and incoming students can get a closer look at their dormitories and a variety of public spaces on campus.
“We believe that nothing can replace a physical visit to a campus,” says Eric Tudor, assistant director of admissions. “However, Dordt uniquely draws from a wide variety of locations around the country and the world, and we want to provide all students with an opportunity to experience campus before they enroll as a student.” Learn more online.

Dordt student earns national award

Kyle Fosse (junior theatre arts and digital media production major from Mozambique) is the latest of a handful of Dordt College theatre students who have earned the opportunity to represent the department and college at the annual Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival (ACTF) held in Washington, D.C., each spring.
Fosse earned the national award for sound design at the ACTF regional festival in Minneapolis in January for his design work on last spring’s production of Ash Girl. Find a full story, including others honored at the event, online.

Forensics team has strong showing

On February 5 and 6, Dordt’s team attended the Icebox Classic at St. Cloud State University. At that competition, seniors Justin Vos and Ranae Boonstra advanced to the semifinal round in debate. Senior Courtney De Wolde and freshman Matthew Ojo finished sixth in Duo Interpretation.
On February 9, the debaters attended the final Parliamentary League of the Upper Midwest (PLUM) Tournament of the year, hosted by Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato, Minnesota. All three of Dordt’s two-person teams reached the elimination rounds. Dordt came in first as a team this season.

Dordt receives grant for motion biomechanics laboratory

Dordt College has been awarded a $130,800 grant from the Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust that will help fund a state-of-the-art motion biomechanics laboratory in which students can record and analyze the forces and motions associated with human movements.
The laboratory will consist of an array of cameras and markers that allow students to track the three-dimensional spatial position of a person or object over time. The laboratory will be located in the Rec Center and is expected to be ready for use by the beginning of the fall 2016 semester.
