This summer, Birds Houston has been raising awareness about the beach nesting birds on the Bolivar Peninsula. To support this campaign, we will have Bolivar Birds Beach Outreach Friday and Saturday of Labor Day weekend, from 9 AM–1 PM! Volunteers will work alongside HA staff member Casey Smith to head out onto the beach to have friendly conversations with beachgoers about how to share the shore with our beach-nesting birds. This is the last weekend for Beach Outreach and we expect lots of visitors on the Peninsula for the Holiday Weekend, so it's the perfect opportunity to make an impact!

Last year, about 75 volunteers helped clean litter from Bolivar Flats Shorebird Sanctuary, and we hope to have a similar turnout this year! Celebrate Houston Bird Week by making a difference for the birds of Bolivar Flats. Your efforts will help prepare the sanctuary for the thousands of migrants coming through during fall migration and help provide clean habitat for our beach-nesting birds.

Improve bird habitat along the coast by joining us in the months of October-March for a volunteer workday at one of our High Island Sanctuaries. These workdays are held the second Saturday mornings of each month. Join our coastal staff to tackle removing invasive plant species and trimming back overgrowth from trailways within our Sanctuaries, and be treated to lunch by our amazing volunteer lunch crew!

Join us at the Edith L. Moore Nature Sanctuary to assist with trail maintenance, litter pick-up, gardening, and invasive species removal. Sanctuary workdays are a great way to enjoy the outdoors and meet like-minded friends! In case of inclement weather, registrants will be notified in advance of cancelation.

While this volunteer opportunity is open to students and children, please note that all participants under the age of 18 must have a participation waiver signed by a parent or guardian who attends the workday in addition to their child.

Trail Support Volunteers are invited to help out at our Fall Night Hikes at Edith L. Moore Nature Sanctuary, running from 7:00 to 8:30 PM on select Fridays. These after-dark outings give families and adults a chance to experience the sanctuary in a whole new light, listening for owls, spotting nocturnal wildlife, and exploring the trails by moonlight. This is a perfect volunteer opportunity for Naturalists and creepy critter lovers!

We're looking for a handful of birders to lead bird walks at Squawk Walk on Saturday, September 19, kicking off the first weekend of Houston Bird Week with our community partner, Exploration Green, in Clear Lake! Walk leaders will guide small groups around the property, pointing out species along the way, including Exploration Green's resident Limpkins. This is a great opportunity for avid birders and Naturalists to represent Birds Houston, celebrate fall migration, and share their love of birding with the community.
