Live at the Dietrich - by Margie Young

The movie Nickel Boys is featured in the Dietrich's 2025 Winter Fest.

A postponed Winter Fest Preview Day, due to weather concerns, didn’t daunt at least 30 foreign and independent movie fans last Tuesday afternoon. So many came to see the 21 movie trailers for the films and marked their brochures for ones they would put on their calendars. Ronnie Harvey, Dietrich movie booker, told us that after he chooses them, he tries to find themes that run through some of them. This time he could identify the theme of “expectations” in several of them. In Nickel Boys, nominated for Best Picture for the Academy Awards, two young boys strike up an alliance at the Nickel Academy, a brutal reformatory in the Jim Crow South. Can they expect to realize the dream of Martin Luther King? When you come to see some of the Winter Fest films, see if you can identify other films about expectations or perhaps identify other themes.
Opening Night of Winter Fest is Friday, February 21at 7:00 p.m., featuring Conclave, nominated for 6 Golden Globes, with an all-star cast, including Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, and Isabella Rossellini, telling the story of the secretive selection of the Pope. The second feature is A Real Pain, starring Jesse Eisenberg and Kieran Culkin, is about mismatched cousins who get together for a tour of Poland, to honor their grandmother.  Will they be able to forget old family issues?
We invite you to make your own Opening Night by dining at one of our wonderful Tunkhannock eateries. Right across the street is Tioga Bistro, up the street is Twigs, and a little further away are The Fireplace, Perkins, and The Players Pub.  We have so many choices. From now on Winter Fest and Summer Fest will be this way, an effort to support our restaurant friends.  Fall Fest and Spring Fest will still have Opening Night Galas at the theater.
So many special events are coming – two of them are this weekend.  We are so pleased that falconer Bob Astegher returns with Interview with a Falconer on Saturday, February 15 at 10:30 a.m., a free event.  He will bring Rita, a red-tailed hawk, with him, and his wife, Julie, will be the interviewer.  He has been a falconer for 42 years and has so much to share about his experiences right here on Miller Mountain and other local sites.
And on Sunday, February 16 at 2:00 p.m. another free event is the Courageously Kind Project with Liz and Maddie Adams, sponsored by Tunkhannock Business and Professional Women and Marywood University.  They will guide you to be kinder to yourself and others and you will receive a token of kindness.  To get free tickets to these or other events, stop by the ticket booth or call the Dietrich at 570-836-1022 x3.
Breaking news is that in March we will offer After School Cooking for Kids for ages 8-12 on Tuesdays in March at 4:00-5:30 p.m.  Perfect for beginners to learn the basics and a love for food, taught by Claire Kilker, $50 for the series.  Call the number above to register.
A first time event is coming up right before the Oscar Awards are revealed.  Come to the Dietrich for The Oscars History: Exploring Nearly 100 Years of Cinema and the Academy Awards on Saturday, March 1 at 10:30 a.m., a chance to participate in an interactive morning with John Tindell, Professor of Communication at Northampton Community College.  Come and learn the history of the Oscars through stories, trivia and discussion.  I understand that you may even have a chance to vote your choice for this year’s awards!
Have you seen the articles about the fact that so many of us are suffering from loneliness?  We spend much more time at home or on our phones than we used to. Why?  Was it the pandemic?  Has technology isolated us?  I have found out that if you just make an effort to be out and about, an effort to see new places, meet new people, new worlds open up for you.  At the Dietrich so many worlds are here for you to explore and we are open 365 days of the year.  We invite you to come explore with us.  Will we see you soon?
