Join PSU’s First-Gen Fest — Free food, music and swag!

Will you be the first generation of your family to graduate with a four-year college degree? That makes you a “First-Gen” — and you’re in good company, as about one-third of PSU students identify as first-generation. Everyone is invited to celebrate first-generation students next week for First-Gen Week, an annual celebration at PSU The week kicks off with First-Gen Fest on Monday, Nov. 6 from noon to 3 p.m. at Smith Memorial Student Union where there will be free food, music, games, photo booth and prizes! Help is here for parents impacted by a Portland teacher strike

Portland Public School teachers will go on strike beginning this Wednesday, Nov. 1 if a contract agreement is not reached between the teachers union and the district, likely resulting in challenges for PSU students with school-age children. Students who experience child care disruptions can reach out to the Resource Center for Students with Children for help finding child care and for guidance about requesting accommodations from instructors.

From dorms to dogs: PSU demolition site to host off-leash dog park

Preliminary plans are underway to create an off-leash community dog park at the former sites of Harder House and Parkway Residence Hall at SW Park and SW Market, now that demolition is nearly complete. The Office of Planning and Sustainability is considering options for an interim use for the site of the former King Albert Residence Hall, which was also demolished this fall.

Interested in a legal career? Apply to Explore the Law

Explore the Law helps students prepare for a career in the legal field. The program includes weekly sessions over winter and spring terms including panel discussions with attorneys, judges, law school admissions, policymakers, and more. Additionally, each student is paired directly with an attorney mentor. There are ample opportunities to learn about the field, network, attend court hearings, and even work on refining your application for law school! Application deadline is Nov. 10.

Have you ever wanted to study abroad and travel, but weren't sure how to make it happen? Ed Abroad gives you the chance to study abroad while getting college credit. Want to hear more? Attend an Education Abroad 101 event on Oct. 30 at 1:30 p.m. at the Karl Miller Center. We also have other virtual and in-person events weekly while classes are in session!

Talk with PSU's Philosopher President

To honor the ideals of democratic equality, institutions must reckon with the ways that they have participated in or been complicit with injustice. PSU President and philosophy scholar Ann Cudd will give a talk exploring the ethical questions that institutions and their leaders ask when they consider how this reckoning is to be done. Join the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the Philosophy Department on Thursday, Nov. 2 at 4 p.m. in Smith 327/8/9. You can submit questions in advance using this Google form.

Defying oppression through art: Noon Concert celebrates Iranian women

 The "Women, Life, Freedom" movement is a response to these tragic events. This concert features works by Iranian and Iranian-American women, and the artwork of PSU Art and Design Faculty Taravat Talepasand, in support of the efforts of Iranian women and artists who courageously express themselves in defiance of this oppression at risk to their own lives. The concert is free and open to the public on Thursday, Oct. 26 at noon in Lincoln Hall 75, or view the live stream or post-concert recording.

Trick-or-treat at the Simon Benson House 

The Alumni Association is hosting trick-or-treating at the Simon Benson House on Halloween for the PSU community to stop by from 1-4pm for candy and apple cider. The house will be all decorated.
