A Message from our Office

| Happy New Year!
As we bid farewell to 2023 and embrace a new year, we cannot help but reflect on yet another productive and bustling semester. GPII has overseen significant domestic and international remarkable projects and activities that advance UCF’s mission to amplify the power of knowledge and discovery and unleash the potential of our students, faculty, staff, and community.
During Fall 2023, GPII continued to strengthen key strategic partnerships. Locally, GPII built bridges between key community groups and civic leaders and international partners – including hosting Lieutenant General (Retired) Ben Hodges, the former Commanding General of US Army Europe. As part of Mandell Distinguished Speaker Series, Hodges discussed the ongoing war in Ukraine and European security with students, faculty members, alumni, and members of the community. In Cairo, Executive Director David Dumke served as a Distinguished Visiting Scholar at The American University in Cairo. Dumke taught, spoke at numerous public events, and published several prominent articles about American foreign policy.
Additionally, experts from GPII’s various centers and programs continued to engage with the Central Florida community. Puerto Ricco Research Hub Director Dr. Fernando Rivera was a featured speaker at the Orange County Regional History Center’s Latin American Arts & Culture Celebration. GPII’s Non-Resident Fellow Dr. Thomas L. Crisman discussed climate change and its implication on the economy in Florida at the Tax Collector Fall Education Forum. GPII presented Mr. Jonathan Wolf with this year’s Global Leadership Award during International Education Week. The Nancy and Jonathan Wolf Global Academic Initiative continues to provide opportunities for UCF students and faculty through innovative programs and exchanges with the American University in Cairo.
Complementing this work is the transformative experiences of GPII’s students. GPII interns connected with several GPII guests, including podcast discussions with film director Alison Millar and Vietnam veteran Michael Gormalley. GPII student interns also met with Ambassador Harriet L. Elam-Thomas, who shared her invaluable experience in foreign services and provided practical advice. Equally significant, GPII interns published a wide range of articles analyzing global challenges and current events.
For Spring 2024, GPII has lined up an impressive list of speakers, including experts on African, European, Asian, Middle Eastern, and Latin American affairs, American politics and foreign policy, and culture. We are actively establishing a new conflict resolution initiative in partnership with renowned experts, think tanks, and foreign higher education institutions. This initiative is congruent with UCF’s goal to create real life solutions involving academics, civil society, governments, and industry. GPII will co-host a dialogue conference in Istanbul on disaster management and recovery. The conference will look at comparative approaches to managing crisis, including looking at lessons learned from Puerto Rico.
Finally, we would like to express our gratitude and warm wishes for a prosperous new year to our faculty, students, and community and international partners. Thank you for your support and generous contributions that make our work successful and impactful to UCF, the greater Central Florida community and the world beyond.
