"Tabular Statement showing the federal population in each county in the State of Tennessee is a federal document reporting the population of the state of Tennessee according to 1840 census records. The chart was divided into the three grand divisions: East, Middle, and West Tennessee. The document also recorded populations, both free persons and enslaved. This document illustrates the Three-Fifths Compromise, which allowed slaveholding states to count their slaves as three-fifths of a person in order to be apportioned more seats in the federal House of Representatives.
This source meets the 4.12 and 8.22 Tennessee social studies standards.
