As school year 2016-17 draws to a close the Global Education team would like to extend a warm thank you to all of our teachers, administrators and global education supporters. We've had a great year!

Did your students enjoy yesterday's food for South African Food Day? Be sure to check out this simple South African recipe put together by Sodexo Magic for the occasion. South African Food Day was our final International Food Day for the 2016-17 school year and H.D. Cooke worked closely with the Embassy of South Africa to coordinate a special celebration for the event. A special thanks to Principal Larkin and Ms. Skipper, whose class was adopted this year by the Embassy of South Africa through the Embassy Adoption Program for all their hard work!
On June 6th, the DCPS Study Abroad program welcomed hundreds of student travelers, study abroad alumni, and families to Dunbar HS for its second annual Send-Off Celebration. Chancellor Wilson highlighted the program's dedication to equity and making global travel acessible. Jonathan Kolby, a National Geographic Explorer, delivered keynote remarks. Beginning next week, over 400 students will travel to 15 countries on fully funded travel. Bon voyage to all!

| High School Graduation Task Force

| The application to join the School Board of Education (SBOE)'s high school graduation requirements task force is now live. Selected members will hail from all parts of the District, with a particular emphasis on historically marginalized voices. Half of the members selected will live or reside east of the river. Under the leadership of Ward 1 representative Laura Wilson Phelan and Ward 8 representative Markus Batchelor, this task force will review, analyze and, as necessary, make thoughtful, implementable recommendations to adjust DC’s high school graduation requirements for all DCPS and public charter students.

| The Middle East in Middle America Workshop
The George Washington University's Institue for Middle East Studies invites applications for a 2-day workshop for Middle and High School teachers in Washington, DC, July 31 -- August 1. Workshop session topics will range from "Muslims and Islam in American Media & Culture" to "Music and Political Expression in the Middle East". More information on how to apply here.

National Geographic Education Grants
National Geographic education grants will support projects that aim to teach people about the world and how it works, empowering them to make it a better place. Funded projects must align with one of the Society’s three focus lenses: The Human Journey, Wildlife and Wild Places, and Our Changing Planet. The Embassy Adoption Program (EAP) is now accepting applications for the 2017-2018 School Year! The EAP is an award-winning global education and enrichment program, designed for 5th and 6th grade students in the District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS). A partnership with Washington Performing Arts, the EAP uses the unique resources of embassies in Washington, DC to provide students with the opportunity to increase their knowledge and appreciation of the culture, government, arts, and geography of other nations. To date, more than 50,000 youth have partnered with over 100 embassies and global partners from around the world. The program has received various accolades, including the DCPS Outstanding Social Studies Program Award and the US Department of Education Award for Outstanding International Education Program. Educators are invited to participate in the inaugural professional development workshop, the Center for Strategic & International Studies (CSIS) Global Education Lab, which will be held August 7-9 at CSIS headquarters in Washington, D.C. This three-day course will feature in-depth seminar discussions with leading experts on a variety of geopolitical topics and the opportunity to collaborate with them and fellow educators in crafting new global learning experiences for your students. The Center for African Studies Outreach Program at Howard University is hosting a three-day summer institute for educators interested in reading, learning, and teaching about Africa (August 2-4, 2017). African Studies scholars will introduce educators to history, culture and contemporary issues in three African countries: Ethiopia, Mali and Angola. Qatar Foundation International (QFI) has created an Arabic language awareness campaign with on-line resources available for teachers. In addition to documentary shorts, which highlight inspirational individuals from around the world who found success from speaking Arabic as a second language, the ispeakarabic.com platform provides access to resources, tools, and kits that expand on the teaching and learning of the Arabic language to non-native speakers.
Grants for PD Related to the Middle East
Qatar Foundation International (QFI) is offering Teacher Professional Development Awards for K-12 educators in the social sciences/humanities and arts fields to participate in professional development events that will enhance his/her ability to teach about the Arab world or Arab culture. These awards will provide up to $2,000 towards travel and registration costs associated with relevant PD opportunities. Learn more here.
Peace Trail on the National Mall
The U.S. Institute of Peace collaborated with the Guild of Professional Tour Guides of Washington, D.C. and the National Park Service to develop this path to a dozen sites on the Mall. The trail brings a “peace lens” to the experience of visiting the National Mall and it may be used as a self-guided walking tour or a reference guide, elevating stories of key figures, institutions, and moments in history that demonstrate America’s enduring commitment to peace. This spring semester the museum will have the following exhibitions on view: Bridging the Americas: Community and Belonging from Panama to Washington, DC, Gateways, and The Backyard of Derek Webster’s Imagination which features a display that showcases the creativity and imagination of DC school students. Fund for Teachers Travel Grants
Interested in designing your own summer professional development experience? Fund for Teachers offers grants – up to $5,000 for individuals and up to $10,000 for teacher teams – for self-designed learning opportunities that can inspire D.C.'s educators. Previously, DCPS fellows have traveled to international locations such as Mexico, Finland, India, Ecuador, Spain, El Salvador, Vietnam, Cambodia, and South Korea.

Goi Peace Foundation International Essay Contest
This annual essay contest aims to harness the energy, creativity and initiative of the world's youth in promoting a culture of peace and sustainable development. Teen Travel Writing Scholarship
The Family Travel Forum and the Society of American Travel Writers invite teens to share their travel experiences in words and images.The tenth annual Teen Travel Writing Scholarship is available to junior- and high-school students between the ages of 13 and 18. Youth Conference on Sustainable Development
CONCAUSA is an initiative organized by América Solidaria, with the support of the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF). CONCAUSA calls on young people (between ages 15-17) in different parts of the Americas, to share their sustainable development projects. 15 students will be selected to participate in the CONCAUSA Meeting to be held in Santiago, Chile, on November 20 - 25, 2017.
