1 Chronicles 26:12
These divisions of the gatekeepers, through their leaders, had duties for ministering in the temple of the Lord, just as their relatives had.
New International Version (NIV)
One little boy who was cutting up in church was admonished by his sister who pointed at the men in suits at the backdoor of the church, “Those are the ‘hushers.’  You need to be quiet.”  Of course, the role of the ushers is not to hush people, but going back to the Temple, they played a significant role as gatekeepers.

The gatekeepers in the Temple were descendants of the tribe of Levi.  They accepted assignments at the various gates of the Temple.  Others received the offerings (26:20).  Worship invites and involves all of us in service.  One church in Santa Fe, New Mexico has a single entrance to the worship center.  Over the door a sign reads, “Servants’ entrance.”  We are all servants!

The Psalmist captured it in Psalm 84:10, “Better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere.  I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of the Lord than to dwell in the tents of the wicked.”  What exactly do doorkeepers do?  We stay close enough to the door to help others find their way in.  As one writer put it, “You can go in too far and stay too long and forget about the ones trying to find the door.”  So I would rather be a doorkeeper in God’s house!

Pray with me:
Father, thank you for those whom you used to help us find our way to you.  Thank you for inviting us to go deeper and farther with you each day.  As your servants, show us how we might hold the door for someone else today.  Help us to help others as we have been helped.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
This year we focus our Every Day with Jesus readings on Jesus’ story.  With references to Tallowood's Read Through the Bible in 2018 daily reading plan, let's focus our undivided attention on Jesus and follow where he lead. He will not fail. Neither will we!

Joyfully,
