Jeremiah 32:40
I will make an everlasting covenant with them: I will never stop doing good to them, and I will inspire them to fear me, so that they will never turn away from me.
New International Version (NIV)
“I’ll give you something to cry about,” said angry parents of another generation.  In hindsight, some have confessed they wished they had not said that.  Parentally and grammatically it just seems like an awful thing to say!  Jeremiah, on the other hand, actually had good reason to cry.  His people were about to go into a long captivity  and he couldn’t stop it.  It was like watching a highchair topple and fall with no ability to break the fall or protect the child falling with it.
In the midst of the fog of Judah’s sin, God spoke to Jeremiah and offered words of hope.  Exile was an opportunity for the people of God to turn back to him.  So God promised an eternal covenant with his people.  They thought God wanted to harm them, but God wanted to do good to his people eternally.  This very goodness inspires fear which keeps us from turning away from him.
Which way are our souls turned today?  Souls have trajectories.  Which direction are we facing?  Are we turned toward God today or turned away from him.  Our answers matter, for today and eternity.  Believe this:  God wants to do good for us forever.  How then shall we live?  The Shakers sang, “To turn, turn will be our delight; ‘til by turning, turning we come around right.”  When this becomes our theme, our tears will be tears of joy, not sorrow.
Pray with me:
Father, thank you for the covenant in Christ’s blood.  We praise you for doing good to us.  Help us to live with a holy reverence which turns our hearts toward you.  Help us to see the direction of our souls and to accept the counsel of the prophets in our lives who call us back to you.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
