Travel Oregon Industry Update Outdoor Recreation Development
Welcome to the Inaugural Outdoor Recreation Development Update!
It's an exciting time for outdoor recreation in Oregon. This month marked the official launch of the Oregon Outdoor Recreation Initiative, a new statewide effort that seeks to bring together businesses, agencies, land managers, conservation groups, and recreational user groups with the goal of expanding access to outdoor recreation and increasing the economic impact and sustainability of Oregon’s outdoor recreation industry.
In preparation for this launch Travel Oregon convened a leadership team comprised of 25 members that represent stakeholder groups from key sectors of the outdoor recreation economy and now we want to hear from you.
We invite you to join us at one of five statewide public outreach meetings (see details below). Across all of the work we do at Travel Oregon, we continue to receive feedback on the importance of a coordinated statewide effort to get more people outdoors while also protecting the natural assets that inspire them in the first place. We believe this new initiative is an important next step in those discussions.
We plan to use these email updates as a way to keep you informed on what’s happening at both state and national levels and what opportunities exist for you to grow your own role in the outdoor recreation industry.
Please feel free to contact Andrew Grossmann with any questions about Travel Oregon’s outdoor recreation programming. We look forward to working with you to build a better life for Oregonians through travel.

Oregon Timber Trail Association
On March 24, 2017 the Oregon Timber Trail Association officially launched as an organization dedicated to stewardship, education, community and a quality trail experience throughout the Oregon Timber Trail corridor. The Oregon Timber Trail corridor is the area surrounding a 670-mile collection of existing multi-use trails in Oregon that are open to mountain bike use and that extend from California to Washington.
More than 250 people crowded into Portland’s Basecamp Brewery to celebrate this important step for the Oregon Timber Trail and to learn more about the association's plans for 2017.
Their plans include:
  • Work parties along sections of the Oregon Timber Trail
  • Sawyer certification classes
  • Wilderness medicine classes
  • Bikepacking 101 classes
  • Community rides along the Oregon Timber Trail
Learn more about how you can become involved at OregonTimberTrail.org. The final route will be published after validation from the U.S. Forest Service.
Secretary Zinke Signs Order to Expand Access to Public Lands
As part of his first actions in office, new Department of the Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke, issued Secretarial Order No. 3347, directing bureaus and agencies to immediately identify areas where recreation and fishing can be expanded. The order also requests input from the Wildlife and Hunting Heritage Conservation Council and Sport Fishing and Boating Partnership Council to provide recommendations on enhancing and expanding access on public lands and improving habitat for fish and wildlife. "Outdoor recreation is about both our heritage and our economy" said Zinke. "Between hunting, fishing, motorized recreation, camping and more, the industry generates thousands of jobs and billions of dollars in economic activity." Read the full release.
