June 8, 2022
Greetings, everyone
And now we can all exhale after an exhausting and challenging school year…but summer is its own animal, and the DFPA continues to operate--organizing, strategizing and planning for a strong and more assured entry into Fall semester, 2022. Next month we’ll update you on any faculty and staff changes (including promotions and departures) and ensure any changes to our operational processes are clear and accessible. We will also re-visit DFPA committee structure in advance of our return to campus in August.
Below, see information from an announcement sent out by Loyola alum Ian Brennan to alumni and friends of the Department of Fine and Performing Arts, announcing an initiative to honor our founding Chair, Professor Sarah Gabel (who retired at the end of 2020), for her unlimited creativity and tireless efforts to create and support our unified department. Join me in this chance to commemorate Sarah’s contributions to the University and to the DFPA. All gifts will be matched, dollar for dollar, during the month of June. Once incoming donations reach $25,000, the match will allow us to name one of our most active, busy performance/rehearsal studios in honor of Sarah, a most fitting acknowledgement of her invaluable years of service.
Enjoy the start of summer, and replenish some of what we spent of ourselves last year.

Finally: Conversion from Digital Measures/Watermark to Interfolio Faculty 180 In July 2021, the Office of Faculty Affairs and the Office of Institutional Effectiveness announced the transition from the Digital Measures/Watermark faculty activity system to Interfolio Faculty 180. This transition is nearing completion with an expected "go live" date of July 1, 2022 for all faculty who had previously used the Digital Measures/Watermark system (accessed within LOCUS.) These faculty will be able to access their profiles in Interfolio Faculty 180 at that time. Faculty should look for more information from the Office of Institutional Effectiveness as the platform is live and accessible.
As part of the F180 roll out, faculty can expect increased functionality within Interfolio’s Review, Promotion, and Tenure (RPT) module, already in use at Loyola for tenure and promotion reviews. The RPT and F180 modules will be linked and accessible through a single sign-on. Faculty undergoing an annual evaluation will update their activity entries in F180, generate a preview of their annual evaluation report/CV in RPT, revise their F180 data as needed, attach unit-specific materials, and then submit the evaluation forms directly to reviewers through RPT.
Deans, associates and Chairs will receive initial training on June 13 and 20. Faculty who previously used Digital Measures/Watermark will be trained in July and August, via ZOOM.
Only one Faculty Training Session has been announced at this point:

Senior Exhibition: Extra Lemonade
Extra Lemonade is an exhibition of the work of Loyola University Chicago’s most recent Fine Art graduates. With a variety of approaches to making across multiple disciplines, this exhibition represents the ambition, passion, and activism that make Loyolans stand out. The investigations and discoveries within Extra Lemonade are often poignant and surprising and have become even more complex in these unprecedented times of protest and pandemic. Like the rest of the world, these students are asking the difficult question of what comes next — not just for themselves, but for the world that their work represents.

Honor Sarah Gabel! Professor Sarah Gabel retired at the end of 2020, and it’s time that we celebrate her impact on the countless students who had the privilege of learning from her, creating with her, and being supported by her as they pursued their artistic passions throughout their academic careers and beyond.
Sarah shaped generations of artists through her work in the classroom and studio, and as a leader in the Department of Fine and Performing Arts. Driven by Loyola’s mission, she created a community of artists that stretched across disciplines, serving as a mentor and collaborator for students and faculty alike.

The DFPA invites you to make a contribution in her honor before the end of the academic year on June 30, 2022. Every gift will be matched dollar for dollar until we reach $25,000, doubling your impact on the experience and education of today’s DFPA student
Once we reach a $50,000 threshold, Professor Gabel’s name will be permanently enshrined in a performance space at the Mundelein Center for Fine and Performing Arts—a space where future generations of students will continue to learn and create and grow.
The Loyola Promise is “Preparing People to Lead Extraordinary Lives.” No one has kept that promise with more energy, imagination, and commitment than Sarah Gabel. Please help us carry on her legacy with a generous donation today. It’s our way of giving back just a fraction of what she’s given to all of us.

Pedagogy & Theatre of the Oppressed Conference Recap This past May, the DFPA hosted the Pedagogy of the Theatre of the Oppressed 25th annual conference. This conference was originally scheduled to occur in the Spring of 2020 but was delayed several years due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. This conference hosted individuals from all over the world, including Brazil, UK, Iran, and many different states around the country. The PTO conference was largely organized by faculty member Kelly Howe and consisted of over 50 sessions individuals could choose to attend, as well as several large full conference sessions. Attendees could choose to participate in any workshop, paper panel, discussion forum, and more activities that ranged from learning about PTO’s global activism practices and history to how theatre and activism are used around the world to protest inequality and promote change.
Along with the conference, Julian Boal, son of Theatre of the Oppressed pioneer Augusto Boal, led a preconference workshop for several days before the full conference where a small amount of attendees, including several DFPA students and alum, learned the roots of forum theatre and developed scenes that were presented in the opening night full conference session. The full conference also featured a brilliant performance from Julian Boal’s theatre group from Brazil, Escola de Teatro Popular. The conference was a huge success and we are grateful to have been able to host such incredible artists and leaders in the theatre world who use art to make the world a better and safer place.
