Federation 5: News you can use from across Greater Washington
We are deeply saddened by the senseless terror attacks at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand that have resulted in the loss of 49 lives and numerous injuries. Our Jewish community shares their pain and mourns alongside our Muslim partners and friends around the world. We sadly know too well the cost of terrorism, racism, and hatred. In response to this devastating attack, we are raising funds to benefit the Muslim community of Christchurch. To donate, visit shalomdc.org/newzealand.

Our Moment in Time: A Message from Gil Preuss
In the story of Purim, Vashti, Mordechai, and Esther all understood that they were in that particular place at that particular time for a particular purpose. Each played a unique and critical role in changing the trajectory of Jewish history. Today, all of us live in a particular moment of time with significant threats and incredible opportunities. We must fight anti-Semitism but not get defined by it. We must come together, as a community, to imagine and build our collective Jewish future. I have no doubt that this will happen since it already is.

A Phenomenal Celebration of Our Greater Washington Jewish Community
Last night, nearly 600 community members gathered for Federation’s inaugural Main Event. With fun and lively receptions and inspiration from our distinguished guest, former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, it was truly an evening to remember. Our thanks to the Main Event leadership team, co-chairs Bradley Chod, David Farber, Liz Schrayer, and Michelle Stravitz, for their commitment to making this event an amazing success, to our generous sponsors, and to all of our attendees.

Purim, Memory, and Identity – A Personal Reflection from Federation’s Master Teacher, Avi West
I have been thinking a lot lately about the role of memory and identity. As I care for my almost 97-year-old father and witness his increasing memory failings, I wonder how it affects his identity. A once amazing lawyer and accountant who juggled various audits in his head, he is now betrayed by memory loss and the way it affects conversation and limits social interaction. He truly lives “in the moment,” and that has taught me a great lesson.
