Whether you’re back on campus or new to Duke, the Dean of Students team is excited to kick off the semester with you. In this update, we’re highlighting Care (ways we support students needing a hand) and Conduct (ways we work with students around community standards and expectations). We’ll introduce you to the rest of the team in future updates, and we’d love for you to get involved with our work. Care and accountability go hand in hand, and at Duke they define how we show up for one another. Caring means kindness and support; accountability means helping each other grow and stay connected. Holding yourself and those around you accountable is not about getting in trouble. It’s about being part of our shared community.
No matter how you connect with our office, you’ll find a human ready to meet you where you are, listen with empathy, and connect you to resources to help you thrive. At the same time, we’re here to guide you in making choices with integrity and in balancing compassion with responsibility.
Last year more than 1,300 students connected with our team for support. Hundreds more resolved conduct and community standards concerns through restorative practices that focused on learning and repairing harm. These numbers show one thing: students use the supports here at Duke.
If you or a friend need help, or have concerns that affect our community, you can make a referral at support.students.duke.edu.
Let’s continue to make this semester one where we look out for each other.

POLICY UPDATES YOU SHOULD KNOW |
Our team is always working to keep campus safe, supportive, and informed.
Here are two important updates we’ve made to reflect the needs of our community:
|
HAZING POLICY UPDATED TO REFLECT NC LAW |
Our hazing policy has been strengthened to better protect the health, safety, and dignity of all students and continues to reflect our commitment to respect and belonging where traditions can be celebrated without harm. The updated Hazing policy:
|
-
Broadens the definition of hazing to cover a wider range of behaviors
- Emphasizes accountability for individuals and organizations (both recognized and unrecognized)
- Provides clearer reporting options, more support for those affected, and more transparent consequences
|
|
|
AMNESTY PROVISION EXPANDED TO INCLUDE HAZING (be sure to read this!) |
When students call for help in situations involving alcohol, drugs, or hazing, they can do so without worrying about disciplinary action for their own substance use in that instance or -new this year- their role as active bystander or witness in hazing-related incidents.
If you call for help for yourself or someone else, or if you report concerning behaviors on campus:
|
- You won’t face conduct charges for personal alcohol or drug use related to the incident
- You won’t face conduct charges for your role as active bystander or witness to hazing-related incidents
- The goal is simple: put health and safety first, and remove barriers that might stop someone from reaching out.
|
Note the Amnesty Provision does not cover other types of policy violations.
