Changes Coming to Project MUSE
In July 2016 MUSE was awarded a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to develop MUSE Open.
MUSE Open is planned as an open access (OA) platform for monographs in the humanities and social sciences that will add significant long-term value to the lifecycle of scholarly resources. OA book content will be searchable, discoverable, and integrated on the platform with MUSE's journal and book collections.
The deployment of MUSE Open will involve new design and  technological infrastructure of the MUSE platform that will ensure the dissemination, discovery, accessibility, and utility of the works to be found on MUSE Open. A mid-2018 release is expected.
A beta site will be available in early 2018 previewing the new  design and infrastructure. Sign up to receive periodic updates about the development of MUSE Open.
Project MUSE and Accessibility
MUSE is committed to creating products that are fully accessible to all users. MUSE strives to conform to the AA level of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0 and to follow the technical specifications of Section 508 of the US Rehabilitation Act.
1) MUSE meets the AA level of WCAG 2.0 compliance. See the MUSE WCAG 2.0 checklist.
2) Section 508 is measured by the VPAT.  See Project MUSE’s most recent VPAT
As an aggregator, Project MUSE relies upon collaboration with its participating publishers to ensure that content on the platform meets prevailing accessibility standards. A portion of the MUSE Open grant funding was dedicated to producing educational materials targeted to publishers to assist them in delivering EPUB files that meet the standards promulgated by World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). An Accessibility Guide document is now available to publishers and other interested parties.
