End of Year News: 2022 Edition

The end of the year is a good time to reflect on the old and prepare for the new. In that spirit, we share a few reflections from 2022 that will shape healthcare’s 2023 work in social care.

A slate of new regulations, standards, guidelines, and quality measures related to social risk screening and interventions is set to debut in 2023, including as part of CMS’ Inpatient Quality Reporting system, The Joint Commission’s accreditation programs, and NCQA’s HEDIS program. These and approved state waivers that fund non-medical services (e.g. in places like AR, AZ, CA, MA, NC and OR) present unique opportunities to implement and evaluate healthcare’s involvement in social care programs.

Evidence about the impact of social care programs and policies continues to accumulate. We've added 400 resources to the SIREN Evidence and Resource Library so far in 2022. To see the 33 articles added this month click here.

More attention is needed on whether and how healthcare’s involvement in social care can be a tool for achieving racial health equity. In September and October over 700 people from across the country and internationally joined us in our National Research Meeting on Racial Health Equity in Social Care for three half-days of panels, workshops, research presentations, small group discussions, and even mindfulness exercises. Our blockbuster plenary sessions on abolition, measuring racial health equity, and lived experience experts have garnered a lot of well-deserved attention, but we also wanted to amplify our concurrent sessions, like these on community-engaged data collection and research, an anti-racism data equity framework, and anchor institution approaches to advancing racial health equity. The meeting was just the first of what we hope will be many opportunities for social care researchers, practitioners, community members, and other stakeholders to work together to dismantle racism in social care and advance more equitable and inclusive approaches to social care research, policy, and practice.
