Proverbs 6:20-21
 My son, keep your father’s command
    and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.
 Bind them always on your heart;
    fasten them around your neck.
New International Version (NIV)
                What did your parents teach you? My dad tried to teach me to be a mechanic.  His dad worked on cars and so did he.  One of my older brothers used an A-frame to remove a Volkswagen engine, fix it and replace it all while dad was at work.  You might think that I was genetically predisposed to be a mechanic.  You would be wrong.

                In God's design, parents disciple children.  We see it Deuteronomy 6:4-7, where parents are commanded to love the Lord with all they are and to impress the teachings of God upon their children, talking about it wherever they go.  I called mom on her birthday a few days ago and identified myself to her.  She said, "I knew it was one of you Yahoos."  When I told my brothers she called me a Yahoo they said, "She is thinking very clearly today!"  Then I reminded them that she included them because we are all Jerry and Nancy's Yahoo sons.

                To avoid being Yahoos, it turns out that children have responsibility in this as well.   We follow our father's command and we do not forsake our mother's teaching.  We keep them close to our hearts and fasten them around our necks.  While my dad tried to teach me about cars, he actually taught me a lot about life.  His wisdom remains with me today.  Mom loved Jesus in front of me all the time.  She taught me to follow Jesus and to worship.  These lessons are unforgettable making an unmistakable difference in our lives.

Pray with me:
Father, we thank you for the best our parents gave to us.  Help us to receive instruction from others who are wise in your ways.  Teach us to walk in your way.  Let your truth be close to our hearts, fastened around our necks.  Keep our hearts from evil we pray.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
