By Ann Seacrest, RN, IBCLC, Executive Director of MilkWorks
The LA Times recently published an op-ed that speaks directly to MilkWorks and our mission here in Nebraska. Author Jennifer Grayson questions whether the fundamental ability of American mothers to nourish their young with free, life sustaining mother’s milk is a luxury for the elite, or a hard fought prize for the intrepid?

We could not agree more.

15 years ago MilkWorks set out to provide a supportive environment for breastfeeding mothers. The message was loud and clear back then from public health experts, and clearly stated by Grayson in her 2016 op-ed: Breastfeeding is full of promise for your baby. We wanted that promise to be available for ALL mothers and babies, not just those who could pay for services.

A lot has changed in 15 years. Mothers with private insurance now have breastfeeding coverage. However, each year we provide consultations to ~250 low income families who do NOT have insurance coverage. Our ability to do this is now at risk.
MilkWorks is working closely with our new Medicaid managed care plans to obtain coverage for low income mothers. In the meantime, we must raise $75,000 to make sure that all moms and babies can access the care that they need. After all, shouldn’t promise be a fact of life for ALL Nebraska newborns?

15 Years and 15,000 Babies!

Please consider a one-time or monthly donation of $15, $150 or $1,500 in honor of the 15,000 mothers and their babies who have relied upon MilkWorks for support over the past 15 years. Your donation will make sure that we are able to sustain our services for all mothers and babies. Donate now!
Watch our new video and see the difference MilkWorks makes in the lives of families in our community! Spoiler alert: you may need a tissue.

Bye bye babyworks

You may have already heard that we are saying bye-bye babyworks and getting back to breastfeeding! It's a great time to help us make this transition and pick up some of your favorite baby stuff at reduced prices. Back to Breastfeeding

In order to provide the best breastfeeding support possible, MilkWorks is getting a bit smaller, but better. We are excited for the change, but it will be a challenge for all of us during the month of September. From September 12th-23rd, our retail sales will be limited to essential breastfeeding products, and our groups and classes will be held elsewhere in the Trade Center. We WILL be open for pumps and consultations. Check out our website for progress updates and call us (402-423-6402) if you have any questions. We will do our best to serve you and we apologize for the inconvenience.

A Bundle of Good Bugs

Right after birth, trillions of microbes rush into a baby's gut and start to grow. Most of these critters come from the mom's skin, birth canal and gut. Read more about Joyful Microbes and how a Mom's DNA Alters Baby's Gut Bacteria from NPR's Michaeleen Doucleff.

Living with a Food Sensitivity

Join Registered Dietitian and food sensitivity specialist Jessie Coffey on Saturday, September 10th at 10 a.m. (MilkWorks LINCOLN) to learn about coping with food sensitivities and intolerances. This class is ideal for moms who want information about eating a healthy diet and helping their babies feel good! Call 402-423-6402 to register.

So What's a Probiotic?

If you keep hearing this word and wonder what a probiotic is, read more here. MilkWorks carries Ther-biotic brand of probiotics for adults and infants. They are free of allergic ingredients like dairy, soy, corn, gluten and caesin, and contain no sugar, starch, artificial sweeteners, flavors, salicylates or preservatives.

CDC 2016 Report Card

Not sure we should be grading moms on breastfeeding. After all, isn't it more about support, than a report card? If you are interested, here is what the Centers for Disease Control have to say about breastfeeding in America.

Protecting Premature Infants

In the United States, more than 1 in 10 babies are born premature. How can we help protect their nutritional needs?
