MIT Sloan alum’s invention analyzes the physical world

Dror Sharon, MBA ’06, and his company, Consumer Physics, recently launched SCiO, a hand-held spectrometer that analyzes the chemical makeup of physical objects. Sharon envisions SCiO as a practical tool to extract useful information from objects and materials in real time. Soon, you’ll be able to measure the fat content of foods, check the hydration level of plants, or track the life cycle of home-brewed beer with just a scan. 50 startups, five days, one bootcamp to change the world

50 startups were launched in five days as a result of MIT’s recent experiment in blended learning. 47 of the 54,856 students enrolled in the MITx on edX course, Entrepreneurship 101: Who is your customer?, taught by the Martin Trust Center for MIT Entrepreneurship's Bill Aulet, were invited to campus and challenged to start their company in one week. A new(ish) drug 

Assistant Professor Benjamin Roin is working on a way to enforce patents on new uses for old drugs. In “Solving the Problem of New Uses” (pending publication), Roin calls for
e-prescription software, requiring doctors to indicate prescribed use of the drug. This information could then be provided to drug companies, allowing them to collect on their patents.
