Staff Highlight: Richard Bourgeois, Jr.

Meet Team Gleason's newest Technology and Equipment Associate!
Following his desire for a career that involves helping others, Richard drives forward Team Gleason’s mission to empower those living with ALS. He enjoys working with technology and learning how it can improve the way that someone lives. His passion for working with families who are new to ALS, while educating and guiding them, never goes unnoticed.

Richard is “NOLA born, Metairie raised,” and first learned about ALS and Team Gleason through the Ice Bucket Challenge. Growing up with a mother who served as his grandmother’s caretaker, Richard empathizes and understands the intricacies of dealing with those living with disabilities and their families. “I work hard to help everyone out and ease the burden. That motivates and fuels me.” Richard states his passion for spreading awareness about Team Gleason is forever, and we love that.

pALS Testimonial: Monique A.

"I had the pleasure of receiving a grant for the (NuMotion) Seat Elevator. I can’t even imagine not having this on my new chair. I use the lift many times everyday. It helps me see in pots when cooking, talk eye to eye with people, reach things in my kitchen cabinets, and my favorite thing, hugging my husband.
ALS takes things and breaks them apart but Team Gleason helps hold it together. This ALS diagnosis is such a difficult thing to endure but Team Gleason makes you feel that you are not alone. They truly are only a phone call away. They were so easy to work with. The emails and phone calls were reassuring through the grant process. I am very grateful for all that Team Gleason is doing to help fight ALS."

Spring Into Hobbies
"After 50 years, one has quite the collection of fabric scraps. What to do? I had acquired a number of sports fabrics while making pillowcases, so decided to make an NFL sports-themed quilt with various teams highlighted.
I was diagnosed with ALS in October 2018 and my NFL-themed quilt is what got me through the rough times of ALS when I lost the use of my legs. I could focus on just one fabric block at a time and sort of forget about the pain.
After two years, it was finally finished in February 2020. I could not have carried out this project without my Quantum Edge eye-level chair that allowed me to reach and move about my sewing room."

Cub Scouts Visit Team Gleason Assistive Technology Lab
In February, a local Cub Scout Den visited Team Gleason's Assistive Technology lab to get a first hand look at the technology and equipment used by people living with ALS.

"The Cub Scouts learned how advanced technology empowers people with ALS to continue living their fullest lives. After a wonderful presentation on these technologies, they tested out some devices for themselves," says their Cubmaster. "They used eye gaze technology to change tv channels with their eyes using the Comcast Xfinity Adaptive Remote. They also raced power wheelchairs to understand the range of motion they provide. The boys came away with an appreciation for the role technology plays in assisting those with disabilities."
