BU Quantum Seminar: "Harnessing Randomness on a Quantum Computer" |
Today, October 9, 2026 | 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM | CDS 701
The goal of this presentation is to delve into the differences between quantum probability, and classical probability. The focus of this presentation will be on how to represent stateless memory such as Markov chains within quantum computing emulations. Start with an introduction of concepts that will be important such as Markov chains, and density matrices, describe similarities and differences. Delve into important quantum findings such as Bells inequality, and detailing how classical results cannot constrain quantum results. Density matrices, and how despite the trace being able to be mapped to probabilities what the difference behind this is versus say a Markov chain matrix. How randomness of classical bits helps play a role in finding faster solutions, and how quantum advantage can utilize randomness, but also much more to get stronger results.
Today's speaker, Maximus Morris is graduate student studying data-centric computing with a bachelors in mathematics and computer science

CS Distinguished Lecture: "LDOS: A Learning-Directed Operating System" with Aditya Akella |
Friday, October 16, 2026 | 11:00 AM | CDS 950
Join us for the first lecture in the Department of Computer Science's fall 2026 series with Aditya Akella. All CS students, faculty, and staff are welcome.
Aditya Akella is a Professor and Regents Chair in Computer Sciences at UT Austin and a Research Scientist at Meta.
Modern systems demand smarter decision-making. Today's operating systems rely on rigid, manually-designed policies that can't adapt to increasingly complex hardware and workloads. To address this, we are building LDOS, a Learning-Directed Operating System that treats decision-making design as a data-driven, system-wide optimization problem.

APPLY TO GIVE A TALK AT TEDxBU 2027
|
Share your research with BU |
TEDxBU is an independently organized, officially licensed TEDx event at Boston University, held annually in collaboration with the Howard Thurman Center for Common Ground.
Their mission is to bring together individuals with ideas worth sharing — ideas that challenge assumptions, introduce new perspectives, tell us something we did not know before, or give audiences a new way of understanding the world around them.
TEDxBU is currently looking for speakers for their 2027 Main Event, as well as two new members of our organizing team.
Learn more and apply. Applications for all positions and speaking opportunities are due October 29th.

Join xFoundry and NASA's Nationwide Competition |
Open to all students, teams of two to five pick one of four focus areas and spend the semester finding and validating a problem worth solving in it:
- Predictive User Interfaces: smart interfaces that know what you need before you do
-
Human Performance Monitoring: health and safety tools that tell us when we are at risk
- Autonomous Asset Inspection: AI that warns before failure in infrastructure, systems and parts
-
Adaptive Learning: systems that learn, adapt and reconfigure in high-stress environments
Teams research and analyze the problem rather than build a product, then pitch what they find to industry leaders. Each team has to span at least two disciplines, drawn from technology, entrepreneurship, arts and athletics, marketing, and science, so this is not a competition only for engineers.
There is no cost to enter. Fall registration runs through November 27, submissions are due December 19, and finals are at the NEXPLORE Summit in April 2027.
Register at connexions.xfoundry.org. Full details at xfoundry.org/horizons-challenge.
