FaithAction News - February 2015
The First City in the South
One year ago the Greensboro City Council honored the 18 years of service, education, and bridge-building work of FaithAction, particular noting the usefulness of the Stranger to Neighbor model and the FaithAction ID program, and passed a resolution naming Greensboro as the nation's first "Stranger to Neighbor" city.
We are happy to announce that one year later Greensboro has become the first city in the South to have a nonprofit-driven ID program, for people in our community that may not have access to government issued forms of ID (immigrants, homeless, elderly, etc...), that is now officially accepted by the local police department AND several city agencies.  In the coming weeks we will work with the city to clarify regulations, and  what the benefits and limitations are for each department.  We want to thank Greensboro city officials, especially City Council members, and the Human Relations and City Manager's offices for their kindness and commitment, and to the Greensboro Police Department and numerous host faith communities for their remarkable partnership.
We are also thrilled to announce that several cities in Alamance County will be replicating the FaithAction ID program this Spring, and given the great interest from other cities we will be hosting a conference for government officials, law enforcement, academics, nonprofits, immigrant and faith leaders from across the state in late March to explore the purpose, logistics, and impact of community ID programs.
In the meantime our next FaithAction ID drive, for any member of our community, will take place on Friday, February 27th at the Mullin Life Center of First Presbyterian Church (706 N. Greene Street - directly across from FaithAction).  Doors open at 9am, and participants MUST attend a mandatory orientation at either 10am or 1pm.  Participants MUST also provide a photo ID (valid passport, national ID card, expired driver’s license, etc..) and proof of current address (valid electricity bill, bank statement, etc..) in order to receive an ID!  FaithAction ID cards are $10.
We could not have envisioned a better outcome when we first began a series of dialogues three years ago to build greater understanding, trust and cooperation between our diverse newcomer community and local law enforcement. Thank you to all of the wonderful staff, volunteers, community partners, and diverse participants that selflessly gave of their time and energy along the way to make Greensboro a safer, more united city.
  Peace,
The FaithAction Team
Next S2N Dialogue - Feb 26!
We are happy to announce our first Stranger to Neighbor Dialogue of 2015 on Thursday, February 26th - focusing on how diverse faith communities are finding creative and inspiring ways to love their neighbors as themselves - from education on immigration issues, to shared meals and/or worship with people of different cultures and faiths, to finding ways to serve and advocate alongside our newest neighbors in need.

We would love to have one or two representatives who care about this topic from as many different congregations as possible throughout our region.
Participants must RSVP, as there is limited seating!

The dialogue will be hosted by and in partnership with a wonderful Stranger to Neighbor Congregation, St. Andrews Episcopal Church (2105 West Market Street) on Thursday, February 26th, from 6-8pm.

FaithAction in Schools!            We have been so lucky to partner with artist and photographer Todd Drake over the years (most of the pictures in our newsletters and on our webiste are taken by Todd), and we are particularly excited this year to work with Todd on a NC Arts Council funded grant that empowers young newcomer students at Northeast HighSchool.  A Journey like Us will include over 15 unique portraits and stories that explore the unique challengest and gifts of these teenagers who live with one culture at home and another at school.  We look forward to sharing the photos and stories as they come, and hosting the exhibition this summer at FaithAction!
The FaithAction 2015 Board!     We are proud to present the 2015 FaithAction Board of Directors.  This committed and accomplished group operate as ambassadors for FaithAction, and work with staff to accomplish our mission and goals. Board members provide assistance with our strategic planning process, as well as financial oversight and funraising help.  We are so grateful they have chosen to invtest their time and skills into helping FaithAction best serve, educate and unite our diverse community.

Story Spotlight:
Read Yohana's remarkable journey in a letter she recently wrote to FaithAction.
Our deepest thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of Deah, Yusor, and Razan, and the entire UNC community who lost three remarkable servant leaders who believed and lived like - "we're all one."
