Celebrating Goodwin's 25th Anniversary!
| |
One of Goodwin's First: Dreux Namnoun
It was 25 years ago on June 16, 1999, that we officially became Goodwin College. What started out as the purchase of the Data Institute Business School by President Mark Scheinberg in 1981 has become a pathway to education, success, and hope for so many students.
One of these students is Dreux Namnoun, who was part of Goodwin’s first graduating class after attending the Data Institute. Dreux is currently the Chief Information Officer at Athena Health Care Systems, a job he largely credits to his experiences at the Data Institute and Goodwin. Now, he takes the opportunity to hire Goodwin graduates whenever he can.
Right out of high school, Dreux was part of a program that helped individuals with learning challenges develop employable skills. This program placed him at the Data Institute, where, for the first time, he felt that his learning style was compatible with the hands-on education model.
“This was a ‘last chance’ for me,” Dreux recalls. “I really found my place there.”
When thinking back to his time at the Data Institute, he remembers President Mark Scheinberg being a cordial, approachable person, sometimes even blending in with the students eating chili dogs in the cafeteria.
During one conversation, President Scheinberg said to Dreux that his dream was to make an accredited college by the river. At the time, Dreux thought, “Yeah, right.”
When the Data Institute became Goodwin, recently graduated Dreux received a call inviting him to come back and earn his associates degree, an opportunity Dreux took advantage of. He spent Saturdays and one weeknight in classes.
Fast forward to 2005, Dreux turned on the news to see a story about the breaking of ground by the river to build the new campus. He remembers thinking, “He did it!”
As the Goodwin community celebrates its 25th Anniversary this year, Dreux reflects on the good memories he made, the relationships he built, and how the Data Institute and Goodwin taking a chance on him has shaped the trajectory of his career.
While many things have changed over the past 25 years, Goodwin’s goal of creating learning experiences that support individuals in realizing their highest academic, professional, and personal potential certainly has not.
