We’re back with the year’s first edition of the Blue Futures Pathways (BFP) newsletter - your regular reminder of what is happening for youth, employers and educators within Canada’s Sustainable Blue Economy. If you missed the last edition, you can find it here.

February is Black History Month. To commemorate it, we’ve put together a list of resources that highlight the connections between the Black community in Canada and water.

We’re also launching new, free Blue Futures Pathways learning resources for youth 14-30 years old and educators, and we have an exciting event coming up for youth through our internship program. Read on to learn more!

We’re working on connecting youth with employers in the Sustainable Blue Economy. But first, let’s brush up your resume, and your networking skills!

We’re hosting two workshops on those topics on February 16 and 17.

The theme for this year’s Black History Month, “February and Forever: Celebrating Black History today and every day,” focuses on recognizing the daily contributions that Black Canadians make to the country.

We’ve put together some resources to celebrate, reflect on, and uplift the contributions of Black Canadians.

Among them is the feature length documentary “Freedom Swell,” produced by our friends at Mirror Image Media. The film tells the story of North Preston Surf, a program designed to empower African Nova Scotian youth to connect with the ocean. Watch the trailer below.

If you’re interested in environmental careers, the Black Environmentalist Alliance is hosting a panel titled BEA Hired! Black Experiences in Environmental Careers on February 22, 12 p.m. EST.

In this edition, we’re highlighting an educator in the Sustainable Blue Economy.

Meet Ogaga Johnson, PMP, A project leader and educator who designed and delivered the Project Management training for the Blue Futures Pathways internship program and the internship program at the Centre for Ocean Ventures and Entrepreneurship (COVE).

She’s been in the project management field since 2015, but became involved in the ocean sector more recently.

“Project Management is required in all sectors and especially needed in the ocean sector to rapidly increase the delivery of projects and business value, which ultimately leads to the rapid growth of the ocean economy,” she said.
