Student Spotlight
Film at Mason student Natalia Melnikova’s film, “Why Women Shouldn’t Make Music” screened in the Global Girl Media Film Festival on the weekend of September 23rd.
“Why Women Shouldn’t Make Music” analyzes the way that women and femme musicians and concert-goers have been treated in the modern music scene, and specifically compares their experience to that of men and masculine musicians. It celebrates femme musicians throughout the years who have had to fight against a male-dominated space, and acknowledges that when unchecked, the energy of the music scene can be corrupted by toxic masculinity and become a dangerous space for women and femmes.
The film was made in FAVS 367 Radical Camera taught by Professor G. Chesler.
