In the News: Our President & CEO!

Habitat Orlando & Osceola President & CEO Catherine Steck McManus shared her expertise with local media recently on the subject of affordable housing as well as our vision that everyone deserves a safe, affordable place to live.

Catherine gave insights with WFTV 9 behind the precarious situation many local seniors find themselves in: Unable to afford safe ADA-compliant homes and on the verge of losing housing.

In an Orlando Business Journal guest column, Catherine promoted a new way of thinking when dealing with Central Florida's affordable housing crisis. This column centered on Habitat Orlando & Osceola's new position paper, the goal of which is to spark dialogue and drive progress toward more affordable housing — benefiting everyone living and working in Central Florida.

Habitat mentor and future homeowner share their stories on Spectrum News 13

Mentor, board member, and now "Everyday Hero" Keith Lovett described his work as a volunteer Homeownership Mentor to prospective Habitat homeowners. Mentors like Keith help households become financially prepared to qualify to buy a home by helping families reduce debt, save money, and improve their credits cores. Watch the segment for yourself:

Leading the way: We’re looking for crew leaders

Habitat Orlando & Osceola will be welcoming volunteer groups soon - and we need Crew Leaders to guide these volunteers. Crew Leaders come out regularly to our build site to guide less-experienced volunteers. It’s a modest monthly commitment, and you’ll receive training. A great Habitat Crew Leader doesn’t need professional experience or tremendous skills. You just need a positive, friendly attitude and the patience to guide those new to a construction site. Masks are mandatory on our build site.

How has your life changed?

Over the past year, we’ve all learned life can change quickly. Through it all, our supporters have enabled us to continue building neighborhoods of safe, affordable homes for local people who need them most. This National Make-a-Will Month, we have partnered with FreeWill to give you and your loved ones an important tool. Practice good homeownership by using FreeWill, a free, online resource that guides you through the process of creating a legally valid will in 20 minutes or less.

Monthly Milestone: 2012

We built our 200th Habitat home in our Butler's Preserve community. This neighborhood is named after Mable Butler, a stalwart affordable housing advocate and former District 6 Orange County Commissioner.
