No good deed goes unpunished!

John 5:17
In his defense Jesus said to them, “My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I too am working.”
New International Version (NIV)
No good deed goes unpunished!  When Jesus came upon a man lame for thirty-eight years, he asked him, “Do you want to get well?”  What an odd question.  Who doesn’t want to get well?  The man never answered the question.  Instead he explained why he could not get to the water when it stirred to be “touched by an angel.”  Jesus told him to get up and walk and he did.  But it happened on a Sabbath.
Enter the nefarious Pharisees who ask, “How dare you heal on the Sabbath?”  They were more concerned about the rules than about the reality of this man’s need.  Jesus’ answer helps us:  “My Father and I are always working.”  Psalm 121 says that our God neither slumbers nor sleeps.  He is always working.  Right now God is working.  What is he doing?  He is making all things new, including you.  Do you want to get well?  Jesus, the King who has healing in his hands, wants to know.
Pray with me:
Father, thank you for your work in the world today.  How may we join you in that work?  We want to be well and to help others to come to you and get well.  Thank you that it is always well with our souls.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
