Revelation 21:

Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth,” for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”
He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.”
He said to me: “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To the thirsty I will give water without cost from the spring of the water of life. Those who are victorious will inherit all this, and I will be their God and they will be my children.

Our friend Cherry Mitchell used to sit on the edge of her pew as she watched the bride coming down the aisle at weddings. Some things you just have to see, right? John gets a view of the Holy City, new Jerusalem coming down out of heaven to a new earth.

What will be the best thing about heaven? Will it be the mansions or streets of gold? Best of all that God lives with his people in person once again. Ever since Eden there has been separation. But the world that started in a garden ends in a city. God wipes the tears from our eyes as the last enemy, death is finally destroyed.

Then the one seated on the throne says, “I am making everything new.” Some remember black and white televisions going to color back in the 1960’s and 1970’s. So it will be with our world. The best things will be so much better and the worst things will be gone. No coronavirus or cancer in heaven. No more night there. We will live in the light of the risen Lamb of God. And best of all right relationship with God. This will be better than the precious jewels and gold which adorn heaven.

We are invited to the great wedding feast of the ages. Let’s lean into that aisle today. Live on your tip toes. Some things you just have to see! There is more to this story. And the ending is well, out of this world and into a new one.

Pray with me:

Father, let us live on our tiptoes today and lift up our eyes in anticipation of our Redeemer. Our world is creaking with age. But you are making everything new. While you are at it, don’t miss us. Make us new in Christ today. Let the old fade and the new come as we draw closer to you, we pray. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
