Federation 5: News you can use from across Greater Washington
Today, our thoughts and prayers are with Nathaniel Felber and his family.
Nathaniel attended Melvin J. Berman Hebrew Academy in Rockville, Maryland before making aliyah with his family in 2006. Nathaniel, who is currently serving in the IDF, was shot yesterday in a terrorist attack. We are holding his parents, Judi and Joe Felber, in our hearts and wishing Nathaniel a full and speedy recovery.

Making a Global Impact: A Message from Gil Preuss
As Jews, our community extends well beyond our zip codes. We are part of a global family, one that reaches out to care for one another and build lasting, meaningful connections. At The Jewish Federation of Greater Washington, we are proud to partner with organizations that are working to shrink the distance between us and our fellow Jewish communities around the world.

You Can Empower Our Open, Connected, and Vibrant Jewish Community
Federation’s Annual Campaign closes December 31. When you make your gift, you strengthen and sustain Jewish life and address critical needs for thousands of Jewish community members locally and around the world. Now more than ever, your generosity, compassion, and kindness will make a tremendous impact.

Did you know? Federation Presents the Jewish Early Childhood Education Conference
Yesterday, more than 700 local early childhood Jewish educators gathered at B’nai Israel Congregation for the annual Jewish Early Childhood Education Conference, presented and made possible by Federation. This gathering offers the teachers and directors of Greater Washington’s Jewish preschools and early childhood centers the opportunity to study acclaimed educational approaches and plan yearly curricula. By focusing on the professional development and growth of those who nurture our community’s youngest learners, Federation is investing in the vital education of our future leaders.

Leading with Light
Last week, we celebrated Chanukah, the Festival of Lights. Over the course of eight nights, we lit the flames on the menorah, while our souls were illuminated by the inspirational story of the Maccabees. How can we continue to fan the flames of hope, strength and freedom throughout the year? One way is by recognizing the modern Maccabees who continue to inspire us.

Engaging the Next Generation of Local Leaders
With the new year comes new opportunities to grow and engage young leaders in our community. In 2019, Federation’s Young Leadership will relaunch its successful NEXUS initiative, an eight-session leadership development program for those in their 20s and 30s. Each session will feature distinguished community leaders, define the skills and tools leadership requires, and inspire participants to put their skills into action. Applications are open now through January 4. Encourage the young Jewish leaders in your networks to apply for this unique and valuable opportunity.
