Imagine if you could go on a tropical vacation every year. The catch though: you have to get there by running… that’s a long way! Yellow warblers (and other warblers, too) are way cool because, despite weighing little more than a toonie, they are long distance flyers. PhD candidate Simon Valdez will tell you about the challenges small birds face in a big world.

One benefit of living in the oceanic climate of BC is that we enjoy two springs in one year. In March and April we are treated to a magnificent show of local wildflowers. In October, our soils thrust up an equally colourful bloom of matchless (and often munchable) mushrooms. Most of these fall mushrooms live in intimate relationships with the BC forest vegetation. This talk will explore the science, scientists, and scenery of the wild mycorrhizal mushrooms.

From Meadows Woodlands Far and Near
March 10, 2016 - September 4, 2016
From Meadows Woodlands Far and Near features Brigitte Potter-Mael's delicate watercolours and striking woodcuts, as well as Proverbial Botany, a collaborative piece with sound artist Andreas Kahre. The works are inspired by plants from the landscapes of Lone Valley, Germany and British Columbia.

100 Years, 100 Treasures

After months of speculation, the top ten treasures have been revealed! To mark UBC’s centennial year, 100 Years, 100 Treasures explores the history of the museum collections intertwined with the history of the university. Visitors can hear what the experts have to say about the top specimens in a video installation and share their own favourite treasures in an interactive social media component: #MyBeatyTreasure

Ecosystems In Play: Exploring Biodiversity Through Gaming

How can ecologists inspire children to learn about the natural world in a way that is fun and familiar? This exhibition lets you step inside Phylo - a game that lets you collect, trade, and play with cards based on real-life organisms - and see how life within an ecosystem is connected, and how some environmental events can have damaging effects on life.
