Carrying the Torch of Jewish Community: A Message from Gil Preuss
As my family prepares for Thanksgiving and my kids prepare to journey home from their various posts, I have been thinking a lot about what it means to pass on wisdom and tradition from one generation to the next. My Jewish identity has helped me answer core questions about who I am, who I want to be, and what my role is in this complex thing called life. As a parent, I hope that I have provided my children with the tools to grapple with similar questions and define their own futures.

Broadening Our Thanksgiving Horizon
The Jewish fall festivals took us on a journey, turning us “inside out.” Yom Kippur, The Day of Atonement focused our attention inwardly, examining our deeds and our quest to be better individual human beings. Then, Sukkot took us outside in booths and nature, making us aware of the needs of others for shelter and harvest, as well as our need to give thanks as a community. But there is another unique way to broaden our understanding of gratitude, community, loyalty, and hope. The day before Thanksgiving (November 28), the Ethiopian Jewish community celebrates Sigd, a holiday to recognize how generations who longed to live freely as Jews in the Holy Land have had their prayers answered.

Channel Your Gratitude for Our Community
Thanksgiving reminds us to take stock of our blessings and truly appreciate all that we have. It also reminds us that we can channel our gratitude into helping others, and make a real difference in someone's life. This holiday season, as you finalize your end-of-year charitable giving, we hope you will consider supporting Federation's Annual Campaign so that, together, we can continue to build an open, connected, and vibrant Jewish community.

Inspire Your Family to Go Beyond Just Saying "Thank You"
In Judaism hoda'ah means gratitude or being thankful for what we have. But there’s also a phrase, hakarat hatov, which extends beyond simple gratitude to “recognizing the good” all around us. Hakarat hatov is something kids often practice naturally when they’re little. But as kids grow older, it’s hard to keep that sense of wonder.
