The theme for Everyday Inclusion this year is Inclusion in Action. CPFM is invited to participate, connect with your teams and other CPFM departments, and hopefully make new contacts across Finance and Admin. Check out the details online: https://vpfa.uoregon.edu/everyday-inclusion-2023-inclusion-action
There will be lots of ways to be involved: weekly challenges (in your inbox or on notice boards), in-person campus and museum tours, inclusive yoga and dance classes, online sessions on neurodiversity and transgender inclusion in higher ed, and the chance to have pizza and a chat with a police officer.
The last event of the month is on Thursday, Aug 31, 11:30am-1pm: a portfolio potluck on the CPFM Wilkinson House Lawn!
Connect with colleagues, or try something on your own. You can even read some three-sentence stories from people in our division—and then submit your own (to Debbie Sharp at dsharp@uoregon.edu).
See you in August!

The Trades Maintenance team installed a pond viewer that Campus Planning ordered for the Millrace to create a viewing area. The Grounds crew cut back brush to improve views down the length of the pond.
This was truly a team effort! Thanks everyone for pitching in to make this happen.

Knight Library Door Restoration |
|
|
The repair and restoration of the Knight Library doors, which are opened and closed over 10,000 times per day, was quite the undertaking. The doors originally built in 1937 are massive, each pair of doors with the transom above are over 11-feet tall and 7-feet wide. Each single door weighs approximately 450 pounds and is “partially-cast bronze with intricate geometric patterns and interlocking motifs of corn, wheat, rosettes, and snails” (UO Research Guide, https://researchguides.uoregon.edu/historic-knight/doors). The planning and restoration process took nearly 18 months and required the effort of a range of campus partners. Amy Lake in Libraries; Liz Thorstenson in Campus Planning; Bruce Budzik in Design and Construction; Steve Seeley from the Lock and Key Shop; Tucker Clawson from the Carpentry Shop; along with contractors, craftspeople, and vendors from across the country were instrumental to the success of this project. Tim Gribble with Preferred Construction, General Contractor, started the restoration process in January 2022. Hope’s Windows, a manufacturer of windows and doors based in New York, created replicas of the original doors since they could not be repaired. Joe Mross, Archive Designs, took on the restoration of the decorative grills and hardware, and recreated the original doors’ patina. In May 2023, Steve Seeley, Tucker Clawson, and Preferred Construction began the weeklong installation process of the iconic Knight Library doors that will last for another hundred years.
The enthusiasm and willingness of the team to work together was invaluable while making integral decisions such as how to incorporate modern pivot hardware, reattaching decorative grills, and the installation of laminated safety glass. Steve Seeley’s and Tucker Clawson’s knowledge and skills were indispensable and appreciated by the entire team. Of special note was their unmatched ability to incorporate modern hardware into these historic doors. They truly went above and beyond for this job and deserve special recognition. The project team’s common goal of bringing these beautiful doors back to their original luster created an atmosphere where challenges, such as incorporating modern hardware, were solved in a simple and clear fashion. This project is the sort of flagship experience that makes working at the University of Oregon truly extraordinary and meaningful. A special thank you to all the team members, you did a fantastic job.
Special thanks as well to Renee Benoit for her eloquent words.

I was walking up Agate street between Orgon Hall and the law school yesterday and the flower beds looked amazing. Please pass along my appreciation and thanks to our landscaping team.

I just wanted to say that our campus is GORGEOUS. I have my favorite spots/plants/trees, and particular times of year, but the whole thing is a marvel. I know that doesn’t happen without a ton of hard work and talent, so I want to convey my sincere appreciation to the entire staff (and to nature) for giving us this incredible space to enjoy. Many thanks, and good luck with the challenges of summer and climate weirdness; it’s fantastic that we have this wonderful place to share and enjoy. All the best, Shaul
