One of the neat insights we’ve found at Boys & Girls Club is that sometimes behavior problems are direclty and indireclty linked to children not getting adequate nutrition throughout the day. As you can imagine, after a full day of school, blood sugars can dip. Which can lead to a host of behavioral issues, especially with each Club holding between 130 to 140 kids. You get the picture.
"all food is free from high fructose corn syrup, artificial colors, flavors, or sweeteners."
To help add a healthier solution and beef up the meal hour, Director of Operations, Ashley Lyden, decided to come up with a plan.
Through guidance from Boys & Girls Club of America, our Club was able to enroll in an existing USDA program with Revolution Foods. The Super Snack program, as it became known, first debuted at our Oak View Club site. The program provides a host of healthy snack alternatives for our kids, primarily, providing a supper and snack meal. Which staff and parents can agree has made an added difference.
Not only that, partner Revolution Foods is committed to the highest standard of food ingredients. All food is free from high fructose corn syrup, artificial colors, flavors and sweeteners. But does it taste good?
Putting it to the test, I sat down with our Club kids this past week and noshed on a roast beef sandwich, apple and healthy style goldfish; and washed it all down with pineapple juice. I have to say, not bad! Beats any meal time I had as a kid. I challenge anyone to prove otherwise!
The program has been a major milestone in efforts of the Club to revolutionize food quality and the overall well-being of our kids. The program has been fully adopted by all four Club sites this year.
