The Office of Sustainability and UT Recycling are Officially Merged!

We are excited to announce that after months of planning, UT Recycling is merging with the Office of Sustainability. The merger is an attempt to achieve carefully considered goals related to facilities management and sustainability at UT. We believe the decision to unite two offices with very similar goals has the potential to make the university cleaner, greener and more efficient than ever.

Academic Year Recap

This academic year our offices held various events and campaigns. Below are some facts about our respective offices. We can't wait to see what we can accomplish together this year!

Received Bee Campus Certification
Planted over 100 tress with volunteer help on TN Arbor Day
Created and honored numerous sustainability champions
Zero waste event request form was added to the main campus events page- this makes it easier for organizations to join the Zero Waste movement!

Students Study Sustainability Abroad in Germany

Several students traveled with the director of the Sustainability major, Dr. Hinton, to learn about Frieburg, Germany and their sustainability measures. The trip focused on renewable energy, local economy, sustainable transportation and more. Read more about the trip below!

Environmental Impact Report

If you want to learn more about our year, check out the 2019 Environmental Impact Report. This report covers engagement, academics, energy and emissions, infrastructure, waste reduction, and some of our upcoming projects. SPEAK Continues to Show Student Leadership in Sustainability

SPEAK stands for Students Promoting Environmental Action in Knoxville and is a student-run organization on our campus. SPEAK promotes veganism as a healthy lifestyle, environmental activism, and campus engagement. This summer, SPEAK members are having fun maintaining their on-campus garden.

Community Engagement

Along with our many campaigns this year, we had a growth in our community engagement! Below are some facts about how much we grew.

We had 352 volunteers this year as compared to last year's 117. UT Recycling had 117!
We had 826 hours of volunteer help as compared to last year's 291. UT Recycling had 790.5!
We had 779 people sign Environmental Action Pledges as compared to last years 260. UT Recycling had 467!
Grew from 455 followers on Instagram to over 1,000!
Grew our website views over 96%!

Bee Campus Certified

One of our acomplishments this year was becoming Bee Campus Certified. We are excited about this new initative and our growing polinator garden. What does it mean to be Bee Campus Certified? Read the seven requirements on the Bee Campus webpage.

Stars, Just Like Us:

In this photo, Nikki Reed, an actress, helps clean our oceans by picking up litter. Oceans have an extremely high amount of plastic in them. This plastic usually flows to the ocean from our local rivers and streams, so make sure to pick up litter in your neighborhood!
